|

After talking to some MLI teachers about their new contracts, I started to wonder about this factor. They are now being treated as "local hires" and as such, will lose some job benefits that we normally expect to see in UAE/Middle East contracts such as provision of air tickets at the beginning and end of contracts and conditions on furniture allowances.
Unfortunately, after mentioning this to other friends in the UAE, they have cited examples of similar contracts with new tertiary institutions now mushrooming throughout the Emirates.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this matter? |

If I were an employer in the UAE, I would regard the acceptance of those terms by such a large number of teachers as a very positive sign -- for myself.
I might think that it meant that I could count on taking home a larger piece of the pie.
And I *like* pie. |

The new places, non-governmental, were short of money from the first, so naturally the first place one cuts is teachers' benefits. This has been pretty much the norm all over the Gulf in the last few years.
I don't think I would look at the MLI debacle as anything more than an inter-ministry turf war with the teachers in the middle. You notice that they didn't release the final quasi-contracts until very late to try to avoid a total bailout (already have lost about a third or so I hear). I hope another significant number find something this summer and depart too. That is one way to nip ideas like this in the bud...

On second thoughts, I removed my original message in case the wrong people read it and act on the info. No need to make people's already tough situations any worse.
