Hello all. It has been a while since I have posted.
I have been offered a position it Taipei. The position would have me running the English Program at two schools. That would be some 700 students. This is a job that I have done before in China and the USA. My question is to the wages offered me. Their initial offer is 80k NT a month plus accommodations. From the little bit of research I have done to date that would seem to be just slightly higher then a teachers wage. Am I correct in that assumption? I know that this may be a personal question, but just what is the going rate?
Thanks |

Current teaching wages being offered for salary are 55-60k without accomodations. Currently hourly wages are 550-600/hour. I have to wonder how many hours per week they are going to expect you to work and what extra duties they may require of you. |

The deal sounds pretty good to me, but this will all depend upon what you are required to do, and how much work they will expect from you. As Girl Scout points out, the package is above a teachers starting wage, but then teaching work doesn't come with the pressure that this position might come with. |

I thank you all for your advice. I just wanted to get a baseline figure from which to star my negations from. I am well aware of the work involved in such a start up situation so I need to make sure that I will be compensated at the proper level.

That is an excellent offer and reminiscent of the average wages for teacher a few years ago.
Be advised that offers made over the Internet are seldom as good as they sound.
It is possible that this job is for the public schools in Taipei.
Public schools in Taipei hire teachers directly and do not allocate part of the teachers salary to agents in return for kickbacks as is very common on the rest of Taiwan.
Take it but be cautious as it may be an agent misrepresenting themselves and the position offered.
Good luck!

But Aristotle, this is not a pure teaching job. This is a management position, with possible teaching hours included. Do you even read posts before you reply?
You have never provided a source for your claim that wages are not as good as they used to be. I have shown clearly that wages are higher now than they used to be. Where are your facts to back up your claim?

I don't think you read posts very carefully Aristotle. Reading between the lines it seems that the OP knows exactly who he or she is going to be working for. Considering the position being offered it is highly unlikely to be in a public school. It is more likely to be for a private company, or private elementary school.

This is not true.
Public schools in Taiwan cannot hire foreigners legally - full stop. The only exceptions being rural schools involved in the government current program.
Even when public schools do hire teacher (illegally) they almost always do so through a recruiter. My best guess is that 95% of positions in public schools are filled through recruiters.

Considering the above, it wouldn't seem so! |

Clark the girl scout said 550-600NT average.
As I said two months ago to you, "welcome to the wages of 1991".
Please do not reiterate your 14 years of zero inflation theory. |

Well it looks like Aristotle's shadow Jon Jack is back. Let's see if he makes any posts of any value in this stint as he certainly didn't last time.
The fact is that wages are higher now than they have been in the past. This is a fact and I have pointed to the evidence for this on a number of occasions.
If you want to try to suggest that they aren't then prove it. If you can't prove then don't bother posting your uninformed opinion here Jonjack! |

What are your quals and what sort of program are you setting up? In accordance to govt. requirements or just willy nilly on your own? Built for students headed overseas or for seedlings looking to take root here?
It's easy as pie to get a 70,000TWD montly contract here for a 9-5 type position -- given that you have a bit of experience, the minimum quals, and enough street smarts to not come to an interview wearing an Iron Maiden T shirt and a rodeo beltbuckle. For a situation where you set up and run an English Program at two different schools 80,000 seems really horribly low to me -- but that may be the market price due to an oversupply of anything-but-home folks sticking around on this island.
Also, your avatar is way too big and it screws up the tables on the forums. Can't you get it down to 80 by 80 pixels or something? |
