Why do they wash up in soapy water and then go to all that trouble of rinsing all the washing up in clean water?

I do this too, always have. British people on TV don't. My mom always told us we'd get diarrhea if we at off plates that had soap on them, but I guess you guys survive, somehow. My ex-roomate (British) left the soap on, but I didn't like drinking water from glasses that tasted like soap...

Agreed, now that's just stupid. My mom verges on Turkish mother insanity for cleanliness, and she always made us wash the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher, saying the dishwasher was just to 'sanitize' them, and that stuff on the dishes would clog the trap. I always swore I would never engage in such silliness.

And now I'm a grown-up and I have my first dishwasher, and dammit, I never wash them first. I even looked in the trap once and lo and behold there was *nothing* there!

no rinsing them after they've gone through the dishwasher now thats wierd. rinsing before takes the sticky stuff off that the dishwasher may not be able to get.
