U.S. EMBASSY WARDEN MESSAGE
May 26, 2005

U.S. Embassy Jakarta
U.S. Consulate General Surabaya
Warden Message

The U.S. Embassy and the U.S. Consulate General wish to inform all American citizens in Indonesia that the Embassy, Consulate General and all other U.S. Government facilities in Indonesia will be closed beginning May 26, 2005 until further notice because of a security threat. The Embassy regrets the inconvenience to Americans and Indonesians who had planned to seek consular services while U.S. offices are closed. Every effort will be made to accommodate consular clients as quickly as possible once the Embassy and other U.S. Government offices in Indonesia re-open. Information on re-opening will be posted on the Embassys website at http://jakarta.usembassy.gov. U.S. citizens needing emergency consular assistance may call the Embassy in Jakarta at 021-3435-9000 and ask for the duty officer. Consular officers are available in Jakarta and Surabaya to provide emergency assistance to U.S. citizens even though U.S. Government facilities are closed to the public.

The Embassy reminds all Americans that the terrorist threat in Indonesia remains high. Attacks could occur at any time and could be directed against any location, including those frequented by foreigners and identifiably American and other western facilities or businesses in Indonesia. Detailed information about the terrorist threat, and all security-related Travel Warnings and Public Announcements are posted on the Department of States website at www.travel.state.gov. These are also found on the Embassys website at http://jakarta.usembassy.gov., in addition to recent warden messages.

The Embassy is located at Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan, No. 4-5, Jakarta; the 24-hour telephone number is 021-3435-9000. The telephone number of the Consulate General in Surabaya is 031-295-6400; the telephone number of the U.S. Consular Agency in Bali is 0361-233-605.

Well....to be honest......my senses are on high alert by the US embassy closing.

Think about the timing of it all. President SBY is in Washington, D.C. meeting with President Bush. The front page of the Jakarta Post shows the two sharing a moment of what appears to be exuberance. The US & Indonesia appear to be well on the way to renewing military ties.....something that Indonesia seeks deseparately.

In Bali.....Corby has just been sentenced to 20 years for "smuggling" (maybe) mj into Denpassar from Oz. We all know that Australia and the USA are staunch allies.

In the Middle East....in Iraq..close to the I beleive Syrain border....the Americans are closing in on the despicable Al-Zarquawi (the lead mastermind of the insurgency). There are reports that he has been wounded by the Iraqi + US forces.

Put it all together and things appear volatile. Doubt that I'll be trekking to Jalan Jaksa tonight.

Please Hati2 to all of us ex-pats.....probably even more so to my American brethern( if there are any left here besides me).

absolutely.
all of the above, but mainly SBY getting "jiggy" with george "w".

SBY had been a busy little tourist hasn't he?
hope he checks his "boogy board" bag when he returns to indonesia.

that por aussie girl.
guilty or not, she was screwed.
man, indonesian authorities LOVE to stick it to a foreigner whenever possible.

its their own tiny-minded way of payback for all global politics and all of their personal social evils.

very sad

I agree with you. It is a daily grind of abuse here some times. I do feel bad for the Ozzie girl.....beter to blow up people like Ba'shair or at least smuggle in cocaine. You will be treated better.

From one bule to another....."I've got your back".

Isn't there a full consulate now in Medan? I read that it changed from a part-time U.S. consular agent to an official U.S. consulate after the earthquake/tsunami disaster and resulting actions.

Oh and don't forget that the U.S. gave the taliban known terrorists 47 million dollars months before 9/11 starting this whole cycle of violence.
