|
|
I ran a search, but Im not sure all the information I found is helpful.
Im looking for a place to rent and dont speak much Japanese. I dont have key money, Im not likely to go thru an agent if I really have to pay alot. i just want a QUIET apartment with no centepedes. I dont even need to live in the city, as long as I am on the trainline.
Someone told me that key money isnt as common anymore because of the recession. IS this true? I read online here that one months rent is the common commission for agents.
Does anyone else have any tricks? ive lived in Japan for a year, but my previous apartment was employer arranged. |

Hmm.. Getting confusing now. I posted an answer for you in the other thread, but just a quickie here:
No, unfortunately key money and other fees are still very much alive in this country and you should never budget on not having to pay them... Treat it as a "bonus" if you can find such a place.
Like everything else in Japan, change moves VERY slowly. Yes, key money (and other fees) are going away, but they will still be around for quite some time. 1 month commission will be equally standard for a long time.
The only way around this, (you asked for tips or tricks) is to close your deal privately without involving a real estate firm. This is not so easy (but not impossible either). |

Meh. No worries. I'd be willing to bet that within a week of both threads being bumped to the top of the queue we'll see the same question posted up again.
That's just the nature of forums.
I have no qualms about repeating info for someone or referring folks to old threads. I also have no problems if people have actually made some sort of effort to search (which you obviously have). My issue is mainly with those who log on having posted 0 or 1 and ask questions that are up on the stickies or that a simple "search" could have solved.
BTW, are you in Japan yet? How's Edmonton these days?

or, yeah. Im in japan. ive been here for a year, and am changing companies. The new company kind of wants me to find the new apt, but the one Ichecked out today cost nearly 2thousand dollars in key money.
So I emailed them and told them, incountry hire or not, they need to find me an apartment.
Alas, I havent been to Edmonton for a while. Before coming to Japan, i had the misfortune of living in Toronto for two years. I say the culture shock of moving from edmonton to toronto far exceed that of moving to Japan. Havew you been back? |

Went back for 10 days in March. Wasn't there long enough to notice too much different. Most of our local haunts were still around and Whyte was as crazy as usual...
About the only thing that I miss here in Japan (other than a couple of close friends) is the FOOD!!!!! Edmonton's selection is awesome when it comes to restaurants, pubs, etc... |

Yeah, actually, I dont know how long ago you left, but Historic ALberts resteraunt on white avenue burned down. SAdly, there was a new pet shop above it, too.
Things I miss.
1. 24 hour drug stores. I cant beleive you cant get tylenol in convenience stores here. I cant find gravol either. Or deccent cough syrup.
2. yes, food. MMM.
3. Squirrels. In Toronto, anyway, there were squirrels everywhere. There is nothing furry here. Although, i have to admit being amused by the geckos, mantiss and turtles. They arent cheerful the way squirrels are though.... |

Try Leo Palace or Miniminis. They usually dont require key money but can be a bit expensive. http://www.eg.leopalace21.com/ is the link for leo, but I can't find the one fore minimini. Do a search on Daves and your sure to find something. Good luck! |
