can anyone tell me anything about the 'director of studies' positions at EF schools? I am aware that this is a franchise organization, so its likely that the duties this position entails differs, somewhat, from school to school. nevertheless, i welcome any feedback from people who have worked at EF in China. thanks! |

I know I slag EF English Farce off something chronic, but this is only because I have seen - at first hand - the mess they are in. At the moment they are trying to tell their teachers that the contract states that they must do 40 hours in the office and then up to 24 or 29 contact hours (depending on the season). It's a joke! All that for a poxy 5,500 RMB a month! DOSs get 9,000 RMB a month. If I were you I would get a job at McDonalds in China; at least then you have the real thing. EF China is a fast English outlet full of unqualified, inexperienced prats; most of whom, as I say, do not even have a CELTA or TEFL, let alone a BA or MA, and as for experience, forget it. Just look at what they want prospective DOSs to have: 2 years experience and a TEFL! That would not get you a school cleaning job in Hong Kong, Singapore, or Japan but with EF China you can be a DOS! Even their global academic operations manager does not have a degree! What sort of academic standards do you think can be applied?

I haven't searched the International Job board, but maybe EF advertise on Dave's, and paying the bills is a high priority for most people. I've had a few posts taken down on unrelated issues - if you read the conditions which you agreed to on joining, that's the right of the proprietor. I suppose it's just a commercial reality, which doesn't mean I agree. The same kind of censorship applies in the mainstream media - I doubt if the world wide anti-Macdonald's campaign gets much coverage, despite its popular support. |
