Hey all,
Am heading to Costa Rica in just over a month. I'm planning on being down for some time, possible a year or more. My question is, what's your opinion on the risk of malaria in Costa Rica and bordering countries??
I'm aware that there is some sort of pill you can take regularly to "ward off" malaria, but I hear it has some medium side-effects. Is it worth it? Is malaria really that big a risk?

Depends on where you're at, so talk to people already there and see what they're doing. (anybody?) I have a friend in CR and will ask.
Most places I've been, you can get by on mosquito repellent, sensible clothes, avoiding peak "mosquito hours" and sleeping under a mosquito net. But some places carry more risk than others. The side effects of Larium, (sic?) one popular antimalarial, can be pretty freaky, but are probably more fun than malaria.
