Help?

I am being asked to amend my contract.
Hours will increase from 14 per week to 18.
Money will only increase 1,500 rmb per month.
16 hours per month for 1,500 rmb per month. That is only 93.75 per hr.

What is your advice? Take it or leave it?

If you are working in a public school it looks like a pretty good deal to me!
Let's suppose your current pay is the same per hour as the extra four periods pay:
14 x 4 x 93 yuan (spare no thought for the decimals) = 5208 yuan.
New salary (with 4 periods added):
5208 + 1500 = 6708 RMB.

I have just accepted to work extra time at my school, at considerably less than 93 yuan; I do it because the extra time neatly fills afternoon holes in my schedule. Thus there is less slack, and more income (at 1200 a month). Not bad either!

In fact, many training centres have a clause in their contracts that says extra time pays around 80 to 100 RMB.

Guru

Our college/uni pays on sliding scales - depending on whether your

a) business English teacher or
b) English teacher.

a) always get more than b)

Then it depends on years of experience, qualifications, years in China etc
the rates here vary from 100Y - 220Y / 40 minute class.

ps - how's ya' S'wolffe CD - worn out yet?

Business English a little higher
MBA is highest

BA is low
MA is higher
Ph.D. is highest

No experience is low
A little experience is a little higher.
Much experience higher stilll but a glass ceiling.

14 hours low
16 - 18 hours higher
20 + highest

THANKS!

Now, why are we not teaching them about time and a half for overtime?

This will be a difficult concept for Chinese schools to comprehend. They ask their local teachers to work more and local teachers don't ask for more money...Why should we give more to the overpaid laowei?

To be fair, I had to pay our Chinese staff triple time to work on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd of May during May Holiday. So they are aware of the extra pay during holiday...you might want to check your local labour department to find out about overtime.

Frankly Guru the responses I have gotten about overtime has not been favorable. "What, you work less than 40 hours a week and you want overtime pay, no way!"

Tell me how it turns out.

EsL Gu (Lao) Ru

We get overtime pay and it works out to about time and a half

Where's the problem here?

Anything over 16 hours / week at the moment.

As from Sept. 1st it goes up to 20 hours / week.

but they're bringing in a 10% of annual total salary bonus scheme

if one meets the criteria, one applies - could be worh 16,000 at the end - thankyou! and that's on top of LOCALITY ALLOWANCES, qualification allowances, LIVING OFF CAMPUS ALLOWANCES, holiday allowances, AIR FARE ALLOWANCES ETC

GuRu - I dont know about you pal, but they look after me - and if they dont -the students do or their parents or their friends or the professors in other departments or my Chinese inlaw parents or my Chinese wife

stop your eternal bitching - mate this place is teacher HEAVEN!

I must be on too many pain killers, obviously. Particularly if I misread your post. I must be an idiot! Your judgment is always spot on.

"Bona fide" means real, genuine etc.

For instance, an ambasador designate must present his credentials or bona fides to his new host country before his appointment is accepted.

And, this is not a flame on you. It is a rather common term in limited circles. And I am not suggesting that you do not travel in the best of circles. And that does not suggest that you chase your tail just because you travel in circles. And I am not suggesting that you claim to be a big wheel just because you travel in circles.

And your termination as a moderator has no negative bearing on my opinion of your judgment, either!!!!

Clear MATE!!!!!! 10 - 4 over and out!

Not sure what city you're in, but the going rate (in Shenyang) for overtime teaching is usually 100 RMB/hour.

Does not sound too bad to me considering that 'teachers' at EF China (viz., prats standing in rooms with ties) only get 100 Yuan per hour's overtime (though some schools, like EF Huizhou, simply refuse to pay overtime).
