That was probably the most insane thing I have been to.
Definitely either the best, or second best sporting event I have been to.
Totally unreal..
They attacked the San Pablo fans with rocks, lit fires, and just were generally nuts.
I guess something really bad went down because the police used teargas... Just as we were leaving (about 10 minutes after the game) a crowd of people forced us back in.
That stuff is bad.
I think it is their last game of the season.

Yeah, got caught up in that but i didn't think it was tear gas because i've been tear-gassed before and it spreads over a huge distance making it difficult to breathe sometimes even when you're over a mile from the action. The wind spreads it...i didn't feel any tear gas effects...maybe we got away just in time (with a bit of running ha ha) Crowd behaviour is so funny, as soon as 1 person runs, everyone runs eve when they have no idea why. We're no better than sheep.
Not the best game, River were rubbish, Sao Paolo clearly superior and the standard of play of like watching a bottom half Premiership game (albeit between teams who pass the ball along the ground and don't just launch it 100m in the air upfield). The first touch of the river players was, to put it mildly, amateurish; really, really poor , no one seemed to able to control the ball. Even worse was River's defence which was unbeliveably bad. No marking, no communication, if Sao Paolo had scored 5 in the first half i'd no have been suprised (we were sat in line with the River goal that Sao Paolo were attcking in the 1st half).
But the fans are amazing. Argentine and English fans are the same, the only fans in the world who'll support their team til the and of the game, singing and chanting even when losing (and sometimes more when losing. Particularly liked the chant in homage to Chilean Marcelo Salas "Puta la hueva que tenemos que ganar!!", 65000 Argentines shouting a Chilean obscenity. Entertaining.) These guys, like in england, are true fans. Italians and Spanish fans will walk out, boo and hiss their own team. Argentines say "we" when referring to their team like we do in England. It's so much more passionate, like it really means something. Sadly, the football violence here is quite bad, like us in England 20 years ago. Still, it adds to the fun...!!

I'm not sure what it was then. The gas did spread well up into the stands... and my eyes were the main thing hurting, along with my nose.
Oh ... it is Sao Paulo!!I asked my friend and he said it was san pablo.I asked if he was talking about the biggest city (I think) in Brazil and he said no...
I thought that was so cool that they were chanting harder when they were losing.. That giant flag was insane.
I have never been to a soccer match before. Even if River was sucking, I still had a great time.
and matt, did you go to el tigre last friday?
I saw some guy who looked like the guy that used to be in your profile on the bus.
I will try to post some pictures later. |

Sounds like it must have been tear gas then...we got out the ground pretty quickly and there were certainly some rounds of something fired off but it seems like you guys stuck inside got it worse!!
And San Pablo is what they call Sao Paulo here so either your mate didn't pay much attention in geography class at school or he misunderstood what you were saying
And i wasn't in Tigre last weekend so i can only assume there are 2 dashingly handsome guys in Buenos Aires |

Ha ha, are you sure...? There were quite a few individuals around me who were, without a doubt, shouting/chanting `puta la hueva que...` and i know my chilean swearing pretty well...
I read in the paper yesterday that the police used tear gas inside the ground and fired shots into the air outside so sqwerl it looks like you got the gas and we got the bullets!! Ive always wondered what happens to all the bullets that are fired into the air...i mean they have to come down again dont they...and hit someone...surely?? |
