I am new to the TEFL life and would like to know if there are any differences in setting up a checking account or renting a apartment compared to the USA? references? no visa? Any tips are appreciated. Thanks,

Renting an apartment in CR is pretty much like in th US. You will have to pay first and last and most likely sign a lease.
To get a bank account you wil need a reference from your bank back home, which you will need to present with your passport and proof of address in the country. eg a utility bill in your name.
There are plenty of national banks to choose from ... all are pretty much the same. All have ATM machines and will be able to issue you with a card. I bank with Promerica, a private bank, only becaue I find to be a bit more "with it" in terms of service. The only problem is that there are condiderably fewer of them. Especially outside San Jose and surrounding towns.
