Amy,

You mentioned buying a garantia? what exactly does that mean? I know that you need one when you rent an apartment. I have a place to go, at least temporarily, my flight is in 3 days time, but its always good to know options when youre moving to a new city. thanks for your help.

hasta pronto,

maria

Maria -

So far, my main role in the process has been to tag along, smile, and not let my accent out Rolling Eyes so, im not really clear on the whole process... but from what i have picked up, a garantia is like having a cosigner in the states. essentially the person granting the garantia is putting up collateral (ie there own apartment - owned, not rented) so that if you destroy the apartment youre renting, dont pay, etc. the landlord can still be compensated. i think this is more or less how it works.

it is possible to rent an apartment without a garantia, but having one opens up your options. it also helps as far as the total cost - without a garantia, the deposit might be much greater, completely non-refundable, higher rent, more upfront, etc... however, this is argentina and im sure if you look, there are exceptions.

i hope this helps some... Matt knows more about these things than I do.

Hmmm...on the street...!! You'll get to hear some of the best and also some of the most downright unpleasant pick up lines ever the second you get off the plane...

Other than that...at work, if you take dance classes, in bars, the usual places...this is a big city though and it can be tough to meet people. I'd compare moving here to moving to a city like Paris or New York: it can be difficult to meet people at the start and you have to make an effort. Or you might get lucky and meet a load of people in the 1st week here. Portenos are very friendly and easy to talk to but not that easy to get to know..a kind of barrier goes up. This is the same in any big city in the world.

Anyway, good luck with everything.

Exactly what Matt said...you wont have a problem meeting guys, er, rather, getting approached.

Work, dance classes (emphasis on class- if it is a class the music is not so loud and you are relaxed because you are having fun learning and not worried about looking sexy...)

For meeting ladies, as a lady, I dont know. Maybe you could do some flamenco dancing...I heard that is mostly a lady thing. I guess the same way you did it there. For me basketball works because that is a place were guys traditionally go to hang out, like in the US. Whatever you like to do, guitar classes, portuguese classes, spanish literature...just get in to it and you will meet people.

OK, I have now lived in Belgrano for almost a month.
Here is my verdict..
I don't think it is a good idea, unless it is cheaper than places in Palermo.
The area is nice, it seems pretty safe; however it is so far away from everything. It is nice that the bus and train station are close, but other than that.It is on the outskirts of the most trendy barrios. I have never gone to a bar in Belgrano, although I'm sure they exist. I live near the border of Belgrano and Palermo and it is OK, but there really isn't much to do here. There are some nice parks, but they really don't compare to Palermo's parks.
I would live in Palermo if it is as cheap or cheaper.

sheena-

it can be tough to meet people in buenos aires that aren't hitting on you. however, it's not even close to impossible. class and work are good places to start. but also, if you go to the same place everyday to check your email or get groceries or cafe or something, you can get to know people there. you will be approached in the street (quite possibly every time you leave your house), but that isn't really the best way to meet people. however, there are always exceptions.

porteos are pretty friendly and you shouldn't have too much trouble finding at least one you can consider a pretty good friend. through that one you can meet others who may or may not turn out to be good friends. aside from that, i've met several people in my esl training course that i've been out with a few times and they are really great. there are also quite a few people who post here that are friendly and always looking for another fun person to hang out with Smile

in my experience, it can be tough to make friends with other women. **making a huge generalization** they tend to be clique-ish and don't seem to want to get to know new people unless they are male. that said, i just went out with a really great gal tonight who was a lot of fun, very friendly, and very sweet. just keep an open mind and things will fall into place. (and pm me when you get here, i'd be happy to go out for cafe or something)
