I know there are many things that need to be done to teach in Hong Kong such as getting TEFL certification and things of the like. But what about english tutoring jobs that may be offered at universities or secondary schools. Are there a lot of jobs like these and do they require similar certifications or experience? I will already apply for a tutoring position that was at the school I went on exchange to, but I am looking for other options. That job does not require any TELF certification and such. Also, what is required for moving to and living in Hong Kong. Thanks

I am sure I am not alone when I say I fail to understand this post.

You say you realise that you need TEFL certification "and things of the like" to teach English in HK, but then go on to ask about university positions. I simply don't follow.

Work such as that at universities is carried out either by language instructors themselves as part and parcel of the job, or by exchange students, or by the wives, sons, and daughters of senior staff, etc.

As for your what do you need to move to and live in HK question, I suggest a passport and a flat, respectively.

The position at the University is just run by Lingnan. It takes fresh graduates and puts them in the environment of teaching English casually by having the visiting tutor live in the dorm and promote english through activities and things like that. They also assist teachers, but no certification is required and it is the only work of this type at any Hong Kong University.

What I am enquiring about are organizations such as one I have found (Chatteris Institute) which takes fresh graduates and puts them in tutoring positions around Hong Kong in secondary and primary schools to promote english in a similar fashion to the Lingnan program. www.chatteris.org.hk is their website. I know teaching is hard because of TEFL requirements, so I was asking about tutoring positions like these that do not require that and push me to gain experience in the ESL area and gives me more opportunities to live and learn in HK and possibly seek TEFL and teaching positions in the future.

I have decided to bag the teaching part and focus on places that offer tutor positions. Sorry about the ambiguous post, I hope this clears things up. Thanks for responding.

I'm not sure about the others, but this is my experience in HK: The TEFL requirement isn't really that hard to achieve. As far as I know, you can do a little 'on-line' TESL Certificate and it's up to the discretion of the employer to recognize it.

Give it a shot! Good luck!
