Hi, I'm new to this forum and going to be in Japan as of August.

I was wondering, does anyone know what kind of birth control is available in Japan? I know it only became legal a short time ago.

Help is appreciated!

The main kind of birth control practiced by Japanese are abortions. About 30,000 a year. Condoms are widely available and have been for years. The pill is available for women and only by prescription from a doctor and only got approved becuase Viagra took about only 6 months to come to market though it took years for the pill to get approved for use as a contraceptive. The main onus is on the man to wear condoms but something like only 30% of sexually active men are said to actually use them.

This may sound funny! But depending on the size of your partners package you might want to bring condoms. Japanese large condoms are not the same as large condoms in other countries or you might have to buy them at foreign buyers club. I know my boyfriend had this problem, lol!

Hmm, I'm gathering from all of this that condoms are the best bet. I will inform my fiance about that.

Thanks for the help!

CK it's not difficult to find the pill... there's just a smaller selection of types of pills. Also, many women who come from countries with socialized medicine complain about the cost. While I do pay more per pack here than I did in America it's only because I got my pills from a subsadized clinic. Expect to pay around 2,000 yen per pack. For more opinions check out www.being-a-broad.com I found some good recomendations for women's doctors there.

Go with condoms. Condoms aren't only for birth control.

The pill is relatively expensive according to my Japanese wife. She doesn't like condoms and nor do I, so we haven't used them since the second year of our relationship. Rhythm was the method we used. Back in NZ now, the pill is a lot cheaper, but as we are trying for a baby, there's not much point in her taking it!

Fair enough. But then I suppose you can't be too terribly upset if you happen to get a few little Akulas running around either...

If you are in Canada now just bring a supply of whatever you are using with you. I use depo and got a 2 year prescription and got the entire prescription filled and brought them with me.

For the pill it is even easier. I had to find a doctor to give me the injection every 3 months. Not a big deal but with the pill you just have to take it. Only drawback is you need to spend the money before you leave.

posters have brought up some relevant responses to the pro-pill approach. From the OP it sounds like she is in a relationship. Whether they swing or not is their business, but assuming that they are monogamous and know what cooties they've got, what's the beef with the pill? Anyhoo- whether you are willing to bring it or buy it, aside from the size of rubers and the lack of depro shots, you can get it in Japan. Use what you like to use back home.

Well, i think specific brands of pill might be a problem, yes?
I know I love Diane 35, but i dont know if its here.
I researched on the makers website, but I didnt find it.

Finding specific pharmeceuticals is my most difficult task in Japan
