Corporate Communications Business College and Ascent Community College have shut down without notice. While they are not specifically ESL schools, they are (were) darn near reliable on international students.
Apparently CCBC's owner fled to Thailand with tuition money, but Ascent's owner has refunded her students. However, both student bodies showed up in the morning to find an empty school.
I know a lot of you Vancouverites are out and about around the globe, but I thought you might be interested in hearingthat. |

Hmm. Sounds like the Vancouver ESL market is still really weak. |

Yeah, but I think it is starting to get back on track. My aunt runs a program for Japanese students in Maple Ridge, B.C., where they are placed in private (academic, not religious) schools throughout the Greater Vancouver area.
Her business did really well until 9/11, but went downhill after that. My uncle and her have a lot of connections in Yokohama (I believe they taught for 15 years and ran a school there) so that's all that saved them.
These businesses however, are on really shakey ground. I'd hate to see the next coming year! |
