You're welcome. Lloyds is the way to go and I think their rates are as good if not better than the banks. Still the exchange rate is terrible now (91.5 yen to the CDN dollar). When I came 3 years ago it was 76. That is a big drop!

I got tired of the third degree and the long process of getting money orders so I switched to sending travellers checques. I think they are screening closely for "foreigners" money leaving Japan because of the big campaigns recently about "foreigners and crime". And here I was sending money to charity..."Charity...what's that?"--suspicious/perplexed looks by clerks. "Gift to children"( in Japanese), unfortunately the more you talk, the deeper trouble you get in, unless you are totally fluent, and maybe even then.

I've got just two points to raise for the two threads running though this thread.

On address change, you should register at the post office in the town you are leaving as well as the town you are moving too.

On money orders and remittances, if you are sending money to the same place every month (student loan for example) the post office probably has a service where they type out a stack of forms for your use. These don't cost that much money and they save you a lot of time, energy and frustration.
