but that's about the extent of my Polish. Does anyone know of any good software, tapes, etc. to help me start learning some basic Polish before I get to Poland?

Thanks! Smile

Never underestimate that one(vodka) in po;and. As for getting the tapes to learn Polish, etc.I do not know where you are posting from...but if you have access to any major chain bookstore(like brnes and noble)...just go in there and tell them what you need.It is fairly east to locate learning tapes and aids in polish, unless you are living in Timbuktu or someplace.

but I didn't know how to type the "l" with the slashy thing! Embarassed Very Happy

Thanks, bnix...I've actually got a Barnes and Noble right down the street. It just seems like some of the learning aids I've come across are, shall we say, WAY not cheap and I sorta hate to shell out the big bucks for a learning aid that's lousy.

I was checking out the free online demo that Rosetta Stone has, but I have to say I'm not super impressed with it...especially when weighing cost against what you actually seem to get. Perhaps my standards for quality learning materials are too high? Shocked Very Happy

Oh, and I'm broadcasting from the US. (Note to self...remember to cite location when asking questions in posts now that I took it off the profile lest I be flamed by any grumpy ol' TEFL codgers! Twisted Evil )

Instead of spending money on books and tapes - take a look at the travlang site for language learning.

It's pretty good for Russian, so it should work for Polish

Check out a series called Pimsleur. Its a tape listen and repeat course. They hopefully offer Polish too. I know of several people that have used Pimsleur to study Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish. if you can't find it in shops then you can download it off Kazaa

I agree with the vodka comment! A few drinks, and you are fluent in every language! Laughing
