Hello,

I am currently in Shanghai and would like to know about short-term work in Taiwan. I have several years of experience and I am currently doing part-time work at an international school, but am lately finding life here a bit grim and hectic. Part of thats Shanghai but I imagine part of it is just mainland life as well.

People who have been to Taiwan tell me its a bit more laid-back, and I would like to come and check it out for a month or two - the general atmosphere, that sort of thing. People tell me that Taiwan has island culture and so is more laid back than the mainland.

What would be my best options for short term housing and employment? Are there universities that rent out dorm rooms, or smaller cities where I can find a cheap place to stay... I don't have to be in the biggest city or someplace think with foreigners/discos, but a wee bit of entertainment or variety might be nice. As far as the employment, something that would help me break even would be nice, I could come over with about $1300 US and if I returned with the same amount (give that I return!) i would be satsified.

Thanks in advance.

James

I won't answer the employment question as the answer is quite detailed and has been provided many times on this forum. I suggest that you use the search function and all will be revealed.

As far as accomodation, I would suggest that hostels or share accomodation should be the areas that you investigate. To my knowledge universities dorms are largely for locals, and getting a room there would take some arrangement.

Quite honestly I don't think 1300 is enough to do what you want / to get started in Taiwan. You'll run out of money well before your first paycheck, and if you're in a short time work situation those paychecks will be a lot harder to find. There are more teachers here than schools need, so it's an employer's market right now, and they can mostly set the terms they want. 3000USD is probably what you'd need to get started, but at least 2000 and that'd be scrimping and saving every cent you could for six weeks (two weeks of job searching and one month until payday).

The cheapest single room hostels you'll find in Taipei cost about 15USD a night. Other places are cheaper, but I don't know by how much. Taiwan isn't cheap.
