|

I am looking for a place to stay in Bangkok until about the end of September. Needs to be furnished, with a private toilet, within walking distance (say .5-.75 km) of a skytrain or metro stop or a short bus ride (not a motorcycle or a taxi), reasonably inexpensive (under 10,000 for sure and closer to 5,000 would be better), and with a low deposit (not more than one month on top of the rent). A/C is not strictly neccesary but would be nice if possible.
I am currently in a guesthouse near Siam Square but they won't come down on the rates by more than 10 percent on a monthly basis, which puts it at more than 13,000 baht a month and thus more than I really want to pay. This also seems to be true of the other guesthouses in the area. Tried looking at some of the apartment-finding websites but the sheer numbers made my head spin, a lot of them were lacking crucial detail, and most of them wanted at least two months' deposit on top of the first month's rent.
Thanks for any suggestions. |

Where do you want to live?
The BTS network is still a big area. For that sort of thing, the best idea might be to go to a BTS station, get off and walk around the area and ask in buildings. |

You'll have a hard time finding a place that'll take less than two month's deposit unless you have a good previous relationship with the landlord -- but I'm sure it's been done. Anyway, most of the landlords I had were pretty good about getting the deposit back to me, in cash, on the very day I moved out, so don't worry about that too much.
As for finding an apartment, I reccomend going to whatever BTS station you're planning on staying near and getting a motorcycle taxi to take you around to all the places nearby. If you're staying at Siam Sq now maybe you can find someone to write what you want in Thai, otherwise it'll take you a while to explain everything to the motosai guys -- but you'd be suprised how easily they understand what you want.
For obvious reasons, the motorcycle taxis know every single apartment and their approximate prices in a given area, and will save you a ton of walking and wondering. Give him a couple of hundred baht for his work (shouldn't take more than an hour) and he'll be pretty happy, too, and you've then got a friend in the neighborhood.
The most important thing to explain to them is that you only want to walk for 10 minutes, otherwise they'll take you EVERYWHERE in a given area just to make sure they're doing their job right. |
