Entrailicus uses the term learner with such xing confidence. He is a teflnazi and that is that. Ship or sheep? Is that still in print?
I went to a plenary given by Caroline Graham. For those who are not teflnazis she is the jazz chant woman. She gave the background behind it as follows:
She was doing TEFL full time in New York and surprise surprise she couldn`t make ends meet so she played the piano nights. She worked two jobs to put food on the table like Molly but never complained-tell that to Oprah. One day she was playing the piano and thinking about her class when she had the revelation that jazz could help with her students` pron. She had us all join in:

Jazz chants - even more ludicrous than mario rinvoludicrous in full flow, and that's saying something. I have never met anyone who has done this in class for longer than a few minutes and realised it's embarrassing and deeply patronising. If I, at the end of an exhausting day of doing something, then subjected myself to a couple of hours of, let's say, French, and the teacher made me do jazz chants in French, the bustard would very sooon find him/herself wearing their book of freakin' jazz chants.
Sideways.
with a copy of the French equivalent of Headway for company.
And a copy of the French equivalent of Ship or Sheep.
And, just to make sure, the French equivalent of John and Liz Soars. |

| actually I like jazz chants. They are only meant to last a few minutes. The sts enjoy them and often chant them back to me outside of class. They reinforce the rhythm and pronunciation of English and they are fun to do. I too met Carolyn Graham, had lunch with her. She is very cool. She was a jazz singer before she was a teacher, btw. We all bring our own talents to this job and it's great when someone like her shares them. |

I'll have to agree with you there, I've seen many teachers who don't teach pronunciation and intonation at all, so something needs to be done.
I once had an observation and the teacher was shocked beacuse I was doning substitution drills with upper-intermediate students, he asked me if I thought it was a bit patronising, but I told him him that if you explain to the students why you're doing it then it isn't.
or something like that |

Yeah, some people think that simply correcting the students while they speak is enough. At least Jazz chants are systematic and give students a focus. |

I rarely do this. I tend to take a note and have delayed feedback at the end of the lesson. Also you have a record of pron problems for future lessons. |

Unless they pronounce something in such a way it changes the meaning. | |
