I havent got a cell phone. Nor do I have the internet. I am living in the Stone Age. But I dont mind. It is a bit inconvenient but I rather like having to make a plan to meet and if something happens (say I get lost, am late, fall in love with some girl) then I just use a pay phone to say I cant make it and then go with what happens. It is a little more adventurous.
I havent really had an ending of the honeymoon phase where a lot of little things start to annoy me. I think this is because there are a lot of things here that I did not like right at the start. Such as the dog sh%t all over the sidewalks, the teenagers and kids who have to work as carteneros, the frustration with the language, the colder weather (although the winter here is very mild). These are balanced by the beautiful architecture, the nice people, the cultural and social activities, and the excitement of being in SA. It is like any country in that there are good things and bad things. I think BsAs is a place of incredible beauty and horrifying injustice all rolled in to one. There are protests every single day in Plaza de Mayo. The plaza is ugly. When I arrived, I thought it would be this grand civic space, the heart of the city- right? Well, it is the heart of the city: full of trash, vendors selling candied peanuts, policemen, barricades, and pigeons. The grass is gone from being trampled and the fountains are busted. The metal barricades used to block the protesters from the government buildiings are just left in the plaza and then put around the buildings whenever needed because they are needed so often.
I find this fascinating. I dont know if this type of protesting is bad or good...On one hand the people care enough about whatever the march is for to gather together on a workday and come and make their voices heard. On the other hand, these protests seem to have little effect as everyone expects them now and the other people just go about their business, paying the protesters little mind. I personally like the protests- at least they are trying to something, right? But bear in mind, I have a very limited viewpoint (I dont know the history, the language, or often what the individual protests are about).
So, this is a little piece of Buenos Aires. |
