I am a new ESL teacher. If I want to teach in Japan, where am I better off taking my first job: China or Korea?
Is there anything in particular the Japanese want in ESL job experience? Are they more attracted to people who taught in a Chinese university or a Korean hagwon or elementary school? I've got many decisions to make and I'm inclined to go to Korea for the money. Because I know once I get to Japan (probably 2 years, may take a year off to go to Central America, etc.) I'll be spending like crazy and won't save much, if anything.
Thanks.

If you want to teach in Japan the best place to to go first is Japan. Whether you choose to go to China or Korea first is irrelevant as it will make no difference to your job chances in Japan which of th etwo you have prior experience in.
without Japanese you can only work in conversation schools in Japan (or maybe some disppatch companies). The main chains hire from OUTSIDE Japan (eg US, Canada, Aus) so you will be at a disadvantage by going first to Korea or China but other smaller chains and schools hire from within Japan. |

Not entirely true, but this depends on the level of Japanese you are talking about. JET Programme doesn't require any Japanese. Working FT or PT in high schools (like mine) doesn't demand it. |

The issue is, I don't have the money right now to just go to Japan or any other country. I guess for this reason, I need to go do my time in Korea... |

How much money do you think you need to get started in Japan? |
