I am 26, born USA and have all my documents in order.

My question:
I've heard that you get paid more in some countries (Taiwan) if you show up without a job and find one once you get there. Im wondering if this holds true for Korea. I have a friend in South Korea so I can show up and sleep on his floor while I look, but it would be nice not to have to fork over the cash for the plane ticket.

Any thoughts?

Hard to say.

You can have a school or recruiter pre-pay for your flight and thus you're not out of pocket if you can't find a job when in Korea. But it means you're stuck with that school pretty much for a year, so if you get a visa with them, it's them for a year and you're locked in.

If you go to Korea first and sleep on your friend's floor, yes, you can shop around. But I would do my research on any school before you start working there because once you're locked in, that's it. No getting out for a year.

Korea is the best deal for saving money by far, unless you feel up to living in a tiny little Chinese city for a year, working your buitt off and making yourself invaluable to your school and negotiate a sweet second year deal (like I did).

I got a cheap flight from LA to Seoul from Northwest/KLM airlines a year ago. $340 one way. Then found a quick summer camp to cover that expense. Go now for camps Very Happy

How sweet is sweet? Most jobs pay 6000 RMB/month max, no? To the OP- no worries about getting locked in. Your boss will fire you in 5 months to avoid paying the recruiter fee. If not, he will fire you in 11 months to avoid paying your severance. If not, then you may have a problem...
