|
|
Aside from being hot dry dusty ugly boring and full of twisters and sooners, I have another reason for not wanting to live in Okie-land:
OKLAHOMA CITY (Reuters) -- An Oklahoma man arrested on suspicion of beating his wife faced year in prison and a fine. But when he spit in an arresting officer's face, he got a life sentence instead, officials said Wednesday.
John Carl Marquez, 36, was convicted of "placing bodily fluid upon a government employee," a felony that can carry a life sentence because of the possibility of transmitting a potentially deadly disease.
State judge April Sellers White sentenced Marquez this week even though Marquez and the officer tested negative for any communicable disease.
By the way Happy fourth if it's the fourth anywhere already, I'm bad on timezones.
P.S. Nothing here is against Oklahomans, only the place. |

Dear Panama Teacher,
" Nothing here is against Oklahomans, only the place. "
Well, having had some experience with both, I'd have to disagree. Tulsa is, in my opinion, neck-and-neck with Jacksonville, Florida in the race for the " Redneck Capital of the World " title. The mind-set of many of its inhabitants hasn't changed all that much since 1921:
http://www.mc.cc.md.us/Departments/hpolscrv/VdeLaOliva.html
But let's have Merle tell us:
We don't smoke marijuana in Muskogee.........
We don't take our trips on LSD.......
We don't burn our draft cards down on Main Street...
We like livin' right....... and bein' free
I'm proud to be an Okie from Muskogee ..........
A place where even squares can have a ball.........
We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse.......
And white lightnin's still the biggest thrill of all
We don't make a party out of lovin'.........
We like holdin' hands and pitchin' woo..........
We don't let our hair grow long and shaggy......
Like the hippies out in San Francisco do
And I'm proud to be an Okie from Muskogee ......
A place where even squares can have a ball..........
We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse........
And white lightnin's still the biggest thrill of all
Leather boots are still in style for manly footwear...
Beads and Roman sandals won't be seen.....
Football's still the roughest thing on campus.......
And the kids here still respect the college dean
And I'm proud to be an Okie from Muskogee .......
A place where even squares can have a ball..........
We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse........
And white lightnin's still the biggest thrill of all
We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse......
In Muskogee,
Oklahoma, USA.
Hmm, sounds like " Dubya country " to me.
Regards,
John |

I have been in both Jacksonville and Tulsa.I do not particularly like either one,but Redneck Capital?Johnslat, have you ever been in some of the venues in Mississippi, Alabama, or Louisiana? Or Texas, for that matter.
Also, there are certain venues in certain New England states(especailly Maine and New Hampshire) which have their share of "rednecks"
An interesting term(derogatory0 for such a person is "peckerwood"
Oklahoma.Well, there are some pretty nice people there, too. Also in Texas.
Of course, like anywhere else there are people who are not so nice.it is perhaps a bit unfair to condemn an entire state on the basis of one song which was obviously made for material gain and which was written quite a while ago.
Oh,and I remember walking into a certain bar in Connecticut,of all places and seeing a German flag, replete with swastika, hanging over the counter..... |

When I was in OK it was a summer heatwave in 1980 and I was driving in a car with no AC. I have never been that hot since. |

I disagree. Lubbock, Texas is far more redneck than any place in Oklahoma.

Dear All,
Well, there are " rednecks " ( good ole boys, Bubbas ) and there are " rednecks " ( nasty, xenophobic, mean jerks ). Of course, there are lots of good people in OK, even in Tulsa. But in MY travels, I've never encountered more of the latter sort of " rednecks " than I have in the two cities I mentioned. Admittedly, some places in Texas will give both a run for their money. Mississippi, Alabama and the rest of the " Deep South ", in my experience, tend to have more of the former kind of " rednecks. "
( although both kinds can, of course, be found almost everywhere, including the North ). But there's something about the combination of South with West ( which is why Louisiana gets into the competition ) and, inexplicably enough, northern Florida, that seems to foster that hard-scrabble nastiness. Finally, all this is totally subjective impression, and therefore completely unscientific, not to mention prejudiced, biased and downright unfair. But dadburnit - that's my story and I'm stickin' to it.
Regards,
John |

What the heck - I might as well cement my growing reputation as a prejudiced, biased, non-PC jerk by posting the following:
Things never said by a Southerner
------------------------------------------------
I'll take Shakespeare for 1000, Alex.
Duct tape won't fix that.
Lisa Marie was lucky to catch Michael.
Come to think of it, I'll have a Heineken.
We don't keep firearms in this house.
Has anybody seen the sideburns trimmer?
You can't feed that to the dog.
I thought Graceland was tacky.
No kids in the back of the pickup, it's just not safe.
Wrasslin's fake.
Honey, did you mail that donation to Greenpeace?
We're vegetarians.
Do you think my gut is too big?
I'll have grapefruit and grapes instead of biscuits
and gravy.
Honey, we don't need another dog.
Who's Richard Petty?
Give me the small bag of pork rinds.
Too many deer heads detract from the decor.
Trim the fat off that steak.
Cappuccino tastes better than espresso.
The tires on that truck are too big.
Would you like your salmon poached or broiled?
My fiance, Bobbie Jo, is registered at Tiffany's.
Little Debbie snack cakes have too many fat grams.
Checkmate.
She's too young to be wearing a bikini.
Does the salad bar have bean sprouts?
Hey, here's an episode of "Hee Haw" that we haven't
seen.
Those shorts ought to be a little longer, Darla.
Nope, no more for me. I'm drivin' tonight.
All you Southerners out there, please feel free to tell me just how moronic I am - although, I assure you, I DO love the Southland ( really!!!! ).
Regards

John:
As a Louisiana native, I suppose I ought to take umbrage at this attack on my homeland and outline the numerous contributions that Southern citizens have made to the world. Unfortunately, my calendar for this evening is too full to do justice to our case.
Let's see what we're doing tonight...put hair up in curlers...get drunk...tape Hee-Haw...watch Cops...call cousin Darlene and her husband/cousin Billy Jo after Cops to tell 'em they looked real good on TV...scream at kids...brawl with neighbors...beat up current boyfriend...etc, etc. It's a full life. |

Dear Irish,
My humblest apologies - your post has taught me the evils and pitfalls of stereotyping. Never again will I make a generalization - NEVER.

John--you are on a roll. That stuff was too funny. Plus Cajun country is different from the rest of the place, I'm sure Irish qualifies as an exception. |

Ah, yes...Cajun country!
(Zydeco music swells as footage of picturesque plantation homes, swamps, and the French Quarter roll)
Where our rich cultural heritage enables us to sound iliterate in two languages...where there is a state holiday for the purpose of acting like a damned fool and drinking yourself sick (Mardi Gras)...where the separation of church and state is about five city blocks...where citizens knowingly elect dirty politicians who manage to get a few things done while lining their own pockets...where some of my relatives (French side) still resent Napoleon for selling the whole kit and caboodle to the US.
Don't even get those old men down at the corner store started about Reconstruction.
Cajun country. It's a nice place to visit, but you wouldn't want to reproduce there. |

Merle Haggard was born and raised in CALIFORNIA! Yes, that progressive paradise which a generation ago elected RONALD REAGAN governor. Get out in the hinterlands away from LA/SF and you will find 'redneck' enclaves there too. I guess we will have to consign the entire state of California to 'redneck' status as well.
