Has anyone made the trek down to Tierra del Fuego? I would love to check it out, but it's expensive and I don't want to mess it up. So if anyone has any advice on travel agencies to go through, what to see and do, when to go etc. I would love to hear it!

Sarah,
I know the director of this travel agency. Her name is Gloria. She has packages for trips all over Argentina, and South America. Her email is:

Ushuaia in Tierra del Fuego is beautiful, and was easily my favourite town in Argentina when I travelled there in 2003. There's not really much to do though. There's a national park called Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego (funnily enough) where you can see the end of the world (well okay, the end of National Route 3), various boating excursions to view the local wildlife, and some trekking in the mountains.

What it does have is amazing scenery; it's a picture postcard town populated with the ultra-friendly Argentines. Go there. You'll love it.

Rio Grande on the South Atlantic coast is not nearly so picturesque, but is perhaps the windiest place on earth - check out the strange, almost bent sideways, posture of the trees.

Aerolineas Argentinas fly to Ushuaia from B.A., it takes about 3hrs and costs approximately $100 (one way). You can also fly with LADE which takes longer and is infinitely more scary.

Beware of the weather though. I was there in October and it could be flipping cold; blue skies could darken without warning and heavy rain would transform into blizzards with astonishing speed, not to mention the relentless wind... July will be the middle of winter so expect the worst.

Having said that though, it really is beautiful and well worth a look.

As I'm embarking on this second Spanish adventure I can't help but read through a lot of the posts and this Tierra del Fuego one seems great. As teaching takes up a lot of your free time, I might tour the country first then when the pounds and euros run out, its back to teaching again, only this time in pesos Crying or Very sad , Oh well who said life was perfect?! Any suggestions on what to do on a month's tour?

cheers,

Joan
