| FWIW, can anyone think of any repercussions that could follow from converting rmb at the airport? Legal, I mean, knowing that exchange places do levy a hefty fee. But then so does the Bank of China when you wire money out to your bank of choice in whereverland. What could they do about it, and how much do they care? |
Someone once said that in order to exchange foreign currencies at the airport, you need to show the receipt given to you when you converted your country's currency into RMB.
Also, for FT's you need to show your FEC when converting from RMB. Given the fact that many schools take back the FEC when the teacher's contract ends, it maes currency exchange at the airport practically impossible. |

This happened to me last time I tried at GZ airport. I now change it on the black market. (And get a better rate) |

| I exchanged 20,000 yuan at a suburban Auckland bank last week. No problem buying or selling the currency in New Zealand. |

| go_abs.. send your money through western union... go to their website to check the branch nearest you. $1001-2000 will cost you $25 and they can get it in 10 mins |

I think Clomper the issue is getting from RMB to US or other currency.
For Western Union, I believe you need US to start with and that only happens when you get your airfare refunded from my exp.
Agricultural Bank of China is Western Union agent as is Post Office but service decidedly 'variable' at smaller branches.
I suppose the fee (over and above the actual exchange rate) charged by Bank of China is the cost of the remitting process and must be looked at in the light of the greater security compared to toting wads of RMB home.
There is other coverage of this topic in the 'off-topic' China forum. |

I was just commenting on go_abs post.. I wasn't able to change my RMBs in Taiwan for USD or NTD.
Bank of China in the Philippines doesn't have RMB accounts nor do they change your yuan to any currency. Only way is through a money changer and they give lousy rates.
I just exchange my RMB to USD at the local old lady outside BOC.
