Why do vegetables make people fat, I don't get it.

I reckon its how you cook the food that makes you fat (or not). Since coming to Spain Ive gained about 8 kilos. Could it be due to the olive oil? Or the imminent onset of middle age? Maybe it's simply lack of exercise and too much of the fantastic beer and wine here.

A friend who leads birders on guided tours of the USA told me a couple of vegetarian stories.
In a restaurant in Texas, one of the group asked for a vegetarian alternative to the steaks on the menu. The waiter suggested chicken, prompting the response, "But chicken isnt a vegetable." The waiter replied, "Down here ma'am, chicken IS a vegetable."
The other's from Wyoming; same context. The guest asked "What can you recommend for vegetarians?", to which the waiter replied, "I recommend you leave the state."
Priceless.

Those stories certainly capture the true spirit of the american west, where men are men and sheep are scared. Who is a virgin in Arkansas? Any girl older than 11 who can outrun her brothers.

I tell the same joke about Greek girls, but I guess its one of those you can change to suit the context.
I told it to some Greek girls I know and they loved it!

Yeah, but from what I heard about Greece, doesn't it also apply to any boy who can outrun his brothers?

This joke was told to me by a former (Greek) boss:

"How do you separate the men from the boys in Greece?"

"With a crowbar."

I'm also a vegan ESL teacher. It's not to lose weight but "some kind of moral thing". It's a conscience/awarness issue with me. Not that I want to judge anyone or get into an argument (I've had a lifetime's worth of debates). Live and let live I guess (well, except for animals). Wink

Anyway, it's nice to know there's another vegan teacher out there. I don't even bother explaining to my students anymore.
