If you could be anything (profession, own business...), and/or was financially set to do anything, what would you do or be other than an ESL instructor?

I would be in the entertainment business trying to become a celebrity actor/singer (I'm better off making it in TEFL Laughing ). I always wanted to do something in entertainment but never had the opportunity, or tried to take the opportunity.

I'm sorry, but I don't see the point in this thread. Some people have gotten into TEFL/TESL as a career. You belittle their preparation by asking such a thing.

Many more got into this field from a zillion other careers or possible careers. Everybody has had his/her reasons. What good does it do you to compare to them?

That is true for anyone in any profession.

I'm one of them. I quit my "prestigeous" (depends on one's view) 9-5 because I didn't enjoy it, my heart wasn't in it...yadah, yadah, yadah. I became an ESL instructor after helping my friend out , and thought I like this- it is rewarding. But even so, if I could be anything in the world, or if Simon from the American Idol show gave me a chance, I would like to be an actor/singer.

Wrong. Ask most lawyers, doctors, biotech professionals, computer programmers, police officers, etc.

You will find that in the EFL/ESL world, there are a hugely higher percentage of people who get into it from other professions. Not so with the ones I outlined above.

There's nothing wrong about asking about our dreams or wishes. Most people I know didn't start out in TEFL. They found it later and fell in love with it. At first I never saw this as my career, but I just can't see to let go. As I continue to get more and more training this one time job has suddenly evolved into mu career.

However, if I could do anything I wanted I would be a chef. I would own a small resturant like the ones in Hong Kong that seat only a few people a night and you change the menu on a whim. I love to go to cooking school, which is one of the perks working around the world has allowed me to do. Or maybe I would have a small bed and breakfest where I could also do some private party catering on the side.

I'm thinking Kazillionaire.

Tough job, but somebody's got to do it.

Just bumming around on my sailboat. Wiener dog and kitty by my side . . . Cool

I don't know what the percentage is...

Many of my lawyer friends who graduated from top law schools after a year or two of working in the field decided it was not for them and went back to school for something else, or took up another profession. My point is, many people are in careers that they do not like [or realize they do not like it later] and unfortunately are stuck in the occupation they are in because their parents told them to (many asians), or they did it for the money...

So, my question is if you could be anything in the world, [ESL instructor, selling peanuts, a rock star, nobel prize winner...] what would it be? I think you are looking into the question too deeply. It is just a fun question. Come on Glenski, I will be Peter Pan, you take my hand and now dreammmmmmmmmmm. If you could be anything what would you be?

Rock star. Easy one. I spent my 20s trying to do just that. I'm a drummer. Still play out and about sometimes. Now that I'm 40 (became an ESL teacher at 31), the rock star thing is pretty well out the window. I never pursued a more realistic career in all that time because I was going for rock star. God close a couple times, too!
But, now, well,...
Actually, for a while, that was my job. Well, not rock star, but working musician. The thing is, that's not a cool job, when you HAVE TO play, and you have to play whatever someone will pay you for, if you want to eat and pay rent. This means country, lounge jazz, top 40, and so on. NO FUN!
That's why TEFL, and TEFL's cool. No complaints at all. But in my dreams? Drum God.

Star point guard in the NBA leading the Chicago Bulls back to the NBA Finals...in the offseason, I would be a rock star touring with my band...

That is my fantasy. However, I am pretty happy with my real life, but it is fun to dream...

Always wanted to join the Navy but was put off by parents wanting me to 'get a degree'. Too old now.

Why the Navy? Well I could sail the seven seas, I could put my mind at ease. And you do make a stand when you join. Also, they always seem to need a hand...

I'd be a psychiatrist and prescribe Glenski some medication. Rolling Eyes

Care to talk about why you feel so defensive today Glenski?
Do you have some unresolved issues with confidence and self-esteem?

On second thought I have to dig out my toejam. Your therapy will have to wait a fortnight at least.

I'd say the Glenster set himself up like a bowling pin, what a killjoy.
What's the harm in a fun thread to help launch the first weekend of summer vacation?

Myself, I'd like to resume my previous career with a majordomo position on a beautiful estate at Cap Ferat on the French Riviera. I could be near my family and the master would spend maybe only several months of the year in residence, rather realistic dream job. Maybe I'll pop in to some agencies while I'm down there vacationing next month--never know!

Nice thread Web Fishing, looking forward to reading more.

Enjoy,
s

I cant say that I have a different dream job. I didnt set out to be an EFL teacher but Ive always been fascinated by languages, so I guess I fell into the right profession.

My fantasy is to win the lottery and spend the rest of my life backpacking in various parts of the world (without having to teach English to support the "habit" Smile ).
