This topic has taken a turn, but I thought I'd follow it.
Mexican towns seen to be really hard for Americans and other foreigners to gage population wise. The town I live in seems a lot smaller than "official" numbers. Maybe because so many people live in each dwelling, because the lots are smaller and don't have big (or any) yards, or because the census in just plain wrong.
A one case story:
I happened to be in when my landlady responed to the 2000 census. In the building there were three "families". Me (I was single then), a single mother with two little girls, and her (her children are grown and her husband was working in Fresno). She reported the building as being home to her family. Herself, her husband, their four children, and seven grandchildren. All except her lived in the US, the children and grandchildren were born in the US and as far as I know have never lived in Mexico. |

Did she explain why she registered that way, or was it maybe because she was wishing they were there with her which is likely and probably happens alot?
I once came across a darling apartment with an ocean view. I asked if I could rent it and they replied "well, we are keeping it for our son who lives in the US...he might come home one day". Well one day will likely be never and I eventually got that apartment and lived there happily for 3 years until hubby and I outgrew it. They needed the money but had been keeping it vacant in hopes of him returning to them. No ties bind stronger than that of a Mexican family (as you know!) |
