A job ad read this:

Job description: Full-time teacher (20-25 teaching hours per week and working schedule is 8:30am-5pm, from Monday to Friday)

Wait a minute... 830-5. Ok, so Im assuming a 30 minute lunch break. That's still 8 hours, 5 days a week, thats a bloody FULL TIME 40 HOUR A WEEK job, and yet they're claiming 20-25 teaching hours? What the bloody hell are the OTHER 15-20 hours a week used for? Office decoration???

Is this normal? Because, I dont know about you, but Im not too keen on sitting around with my finger up my rump for 15-20 hours, I'd rather be able to go back to my apartment and study up or just relax...

Sorry if it seems like Im spazzing out, but Im really truly caught off guard by this. Is this normal?

It's normal, but as mentioned 20 - 25 hours is slightly above average. Some teachers use at least some of this extra time for these things called "lesson plans".

You can also sit around the office, shoot the bull, post on Dave's, surf the net, download music, flirt with colleagues, eat meals, etc.

I'm just guessing, but it probably means that you'll be working the 20-25 hours per week within the given times, not that you'll have to work 40 hours. Still 20-25 teaching hours per week is a fairly high load. If you negotiate your contract, be sure to specify what will happen during any hours outside the actual teaching hours. Then again, maybe you'll have a nice 3-hour break between classes at your school in the middle of nowhere, in which case you WILL be sitting around with your finger up your rump.

Once again I find myself bowing down to your insight Very Happy

Thanks, and youre propably right. 20-25 hours within a 830-5 timeframe, and I will be sure to hammer out just what I do when Im not teaching.

I work the 40 hours a week, 25 teaching hour schedule. Your classes are spread out over the day and you normally get a 1 hour break for lunch. I use my time lesson planning, surfing the net and studying Chinese. I find I get alot done in my office hours time.

One thing, just be sure to make sure the money they are offering is worth all those hours.

Sounds like a cricket score to me! If only England's national team could notch up such a score, then we could really trounce the Aussies in the Test series instead of the other way around!

I think that 20-25 teaching hours constitute a high teaching load, especially if it is for the off-peak season, whereas it would not be an abnormal load during the peak season, as I know only too well from my experience.

The other hours are meant to be spent "usefully"; in other words, you are supposed to dedicate yourself to preparing lesson plans and any materials, such as flashcards.

As it happens, I am currently doing a summer job at a private language mill here in Wuhan (as my other school is on holiday), where adults (16+) are the students, with no kids (hooray!). All the lesson plans have already been made and are in many files, so I don't really have to do anything except do the lessons and surf on Dave's!

Sounds good, except that I have to teach between 6 and 9 p.m. every day five days per week with only a five-minute break in between lessons! Oh, well, at least this gig is only for 20 working days (excluding weekends, I am glad to say) and today is the 7th day...

(By the way, this does not mean that I am only in school for those three hours per day, because I am nominally expected to spend eight hours per day here from 1 to 9 p.m. five days per week. However, I can just come in for whenever my first lesson of the day is due to start, usually at 3 p.m. - hooray!)
