I'm not sure what the EFL situation is in Uzbekistan. But if anyone is there right now, could you comment on the recent tragic events in Andijan? With the more or less peaceful implementation of more liberal regimes in Georgia and Ukraine, this outbreak of violence gives one pause about the potentially catastrophic consequences of pressing autocratic governments for change. Hopefully a more peaceful transition can ensue, but unfortunately this is not a good sign that this can be achieved in the near future without bloodshed.

Any details some one could provide from "on the ground" would be extremely informative to us. And here is hoping that this message finds you safe and sound.

I have a number of students from Uzbekistan. I'll ask them about it.

It's really ironic how the Americans slag-off Lukashenko in Belarus(although admittedly quite rightly!) but still defend Karimov in Uzbekistan who is just as evil,if not more so!Hopefully both of thse despots will soon be history, followed maybe by Putin and his cronies but I suppose it's too much to expect Bush to ever be overthrown, although it seems Blair will soon be forced to do the decent thing and quit gracefully before he discraces himself with any more lies about why he had to back Americas meddling overseas!
Long live the green, orange or whatever revolutions, as long as they are peaceful!

My students don't seem to know anything more than what you'd see on the news. No one personally affected. One student was a bit irritated at the US weighing in on the issue. Figured they should let the UN make such judgements. I guess I have a little more work to do in explaining American reality to him.

Yes, I believe Putin is still 'hosting' Akaev in Moscow.

As for Karimov, I think you're right that he's going to be there for a while. The Brits and the Americans aren't going to push for any change there as they still have interests in the region. The U.S., I believe, still have an airbase in the south of the country. And as long as Karimov keeps screaming 'Islamic Fundamentalists' every time anyone in the country dares protest, he knows the West will back him.

Any change that takes place there won't be peaceful. It can't be. He knows that he's killed and tortured too many people for Uzbeks to just let him skulk off to Moscow. They will rightly want his blood when the time comes.
