Worried I'm over-using this forum but it keeps proving so useful in answering my questions. Thanks everyone!
What I want to know this time is - what date is the autumn term at an academia in Madrid likely to start? Would they expect their teacher to be available for work a few days before term starts?

It starts in September, but youll only get a full schedule by the end of the month.
A good tip - get here in the last two weeks of August, that way you can find a nice room in a shared flat before all the Erasmus students get all the good ones.

That's right, I decided against Santander. It was a difficult decision and I think only time will tell whether it was the right one.

In the end I based it on the fact that it rains a lot in Santander in the winter (which would be a nightmare for my curly hair!) and that friends from England are more likely to come and visit me if I'm in Madrid.

Also, I get bored easily and thought there'd be more to do in Madrid to keep me occupied. Also the job in Santander required 26-30 teaching hours a week and 4-6 hours of other work - which I'm told would be a lot to handle!
