I've just gotten a quasi-offer from HCT, but there's been no mention of salary yet--that will come in a few days. Anybody know roughly how much HCT pays teachers with 10+ experience in the Foundation program?

I also have a bird in the hand in Doha: salary's 12,000, which is OK but not wonderful. I've never been there, though I've been told it's a dull village. Anybody with any insight?

Thanks.

HCT salary should also be about 12,000, maybe a bit more. For info on Doha, see the Qatar forum - especially the long thread on "Moving to Qatar next month", gives quite a flavour of the place.

Doha is not as dull as people say. I think the people who say it is dull are people who haven't lived there. Also as long as you don't spend your time up the pub it is a cheap place to live.

gee, I wonder if it is someone I know too (pick any someone in your list)

But, more seriously, have you ever met 'anyone' who managed to negotiate a higher salary with HCT? I haven't so far...

With a Master's and that experience you should start on around 12 - if you don't have the Master it might be something less - this is how it was a few years back and nothing has changed since then!! As for lively, depends where you are - everyone says that Qatar is the Dubai of the future - some of the Emirates are probably behind Qatar in terms of fun even as we speak and Dubai is only thirty minutes flight from Doha!! Depends what your order of importance is - money, career or fun.

Phone and ask HCT for their offer would be the best bet if you have a better offer waiting. As you have probably read here, salary at HCT is non-negotiable so they will certainly know by now.

Good luck

I started out at the Higher Colleges in 1997, with two master's degrees (in EFl and in Higher Education/Student Development) and 10 years' international experience. Starting salary for me was just under Dh. 12,000. By 2002 it had grown to 14,500 not only because of the usual increments but also because of a fairly substantial system-wide raise in 2000 or 2001 (I've forgotten exactly when). Computer instructors generally should command more. They were starting out at 15 to 17K when I left the HCT in 2002, as far as I know, at least at Dubai Women's. EFL salaries seemed to be starting at 12-13.

Hello Globalnomad,

Can you please give a general idea about the living conditions. How much is the Taxi, Phone, Electricity and internet cost per month at UAE in general and RAK.

Hitesh: In Dubai it was about US$150 for phone and electricity and for high-speed internet I think was around $100 or more thanks to the Etisalat monopoly. Taxis tend to be very cheap outside of Dubai. You can go for probably 5 or 6 miles for $3, but I'm not an authority on RAK.
