I'm kind of grossed out by drag queens, transvestites, and transexuals. It's annoying to me that they're associated with me because we're both "gay", or under the GLBT umbrella.

How very disappointing. It�s funny that oppressed minorities often have to find smaller minorities over whom they can feel superior. But don�t worry, I am quite aware of how intolerant some in the gay world can be. Perhaps your feelings can help you understand those people that you �gross out� with your �lifestyle choice�.

Fortunately my straight (and gay) colleagues have no issues with me and I rarely have to deal with people like you who seek tolerance and acceptance yet are not prepared to give it.

There is a very large segment of the gay male 'community' that remains shocked, embarrassed and phobic about anything 'trans-'. It sort of messes up their rather conservative (and culture-determined) notions of belonging, passing, and acceptance. But as SueH says, much of society views gay men in the same phobic (and hateful) way as gay men view the dreaded "T" people. Everyone needs somebody else to oppress, I guess.

I'm not a minority oppressing a smaller, weaker minority. I don't even view myself as a 'minority' per se.

Seeing RuPaul makes my skin crawl. I don't have to apologize for that. It's not my obligation to embrace drag queens, leather queens, S&M queens, etc. just because I am gay. In fact, I have a hard time embracing even flamboyant, flaming gay men who constantly make b.i.t.c.h.y double entendres, buy tight designer clothes, & lisp.

I don't believe in the concept of the gay "community". I don't feel any sense of communal bondage with other gay men. I hate the fact that the media lumps me into the "GLBT community" ... with 'dykes on bikes', the leather-clad dominatrix gays, the crystal-meth-using, techno-dancing cuircut boys, chicks with d-cks, etc. Honestly, when I've seen gay pride parades, all I can think is: these freaks make life so much harder for the rest of us gays who just want to live a normal life. I've actually heard straight people say, "I used to think gay people were normal just like us, but after going to the gay pride parade, I am having second thoughts." It makes me want to scream.

This is all I demand from straight people: do not physically attack me or take away my basic human rights. That's all the 'acceptance' that I demand. I don't ever, ever demand that straight people not find me disgusting, not think I'm going to hell, not get grossed out at the thought of me making out with another guy, etc. I don't want or need straight people's approval. SueH, you shouldn't want or need my approval.

SueH, I extend the same courtesy I demand to drag queens & the 'transgendered community'. I will defend their rights and be nice to them. I would defend them from physical attack. I'm very kind to drag queens when they talk to me in gay clubs (which usually consists of them shoving a microphone in my face and forcing me to answer questions in front of the entire gay club). To say that I 'hate' them is completely unfair. But I'm make no apologies for being grossed out when I see a dude in a dress, with 2 gallons of make-up on, his genitals pushed up into his body (ouch?!), using a fake feminine voice, (sometimes) with silicon implants, making b.i.t.c.h.y quips, lip-synching to "I Will Survive", etc.

Honestly, how can you take people like this seriously?

SueH, what kind of transgendered person are you? Are you a man that dresses like a woman, or have you had a sex change? Are you a woman that dresses like a man? I am just curious.

To the question of what I am; I'm inclined to make a rather rude reply. But although angry I'll try and be as polite and as helpful as I normally am on these boards. I'm female and work in mainstream colleges here in the UK. My medical history is my own affair.

But as I was included in the list of people who gross JtM out you may draw your own conclusions.

As for drag queens in gay clubs, I also wonder at their frequency. But they don't worry me and sometimes the good ones can be very funny. I just try and accept the full diversity of expression even if most of it isn't my cup of tea. As for worrying about what goes on at Prides - well, it's a day in the limelight for some people - of course things are over the top. Haven't you ever seen straight people at Carneval?
