have been in Korea for almost two years to pay off some debts from home and absolutely HATE it.
does anyone with experience in taiwan and korea have any advice on whether i should come and teach in taiwan. the food has to be better than the korean slop and i've heard that people in taiwan actually smile!
any input is appreciated. thanks. |

Food is a matter of taste.
I love Korean food.
I've also had a lot of smiles from Koreans.
Everyone's experience is different. |

I also know a couple of people teaching in Taiwan now who have taught in Korea and absolutely hated living and teaching in Korea.
My opinion after living and teaching EFL in both Korea and Taiwan:
1. Climate: Taiwan - no freezing winters.
2. Food: Korea
3. Friendly People: Chinese
4. Girls: Korea
5. Access to South East Asia: Taiwan
6. Apartments: Taiwan
7. Beer: Korea
8. Xenophobia: Taiwanese are less xenophobic.
9. EFL Wages: Korean
10. Ripped off by School: Korea may be riskier
11. City: Seoul is more interesting, better developed subway lines.
12. Pollution: Taiwan. Seoul is also polluted, though.
13. Savings: Korea and Taiwan are pretty even on this
14. University Jobs: Taiwan
NOTE: People normally do not have the same experiences.

I was in Korea for three months and hated every single minute. I was in Taiwan for two years and loved every single minute. In my opinion Taiwan is far far better. But, as Miyazaki said, every person's experience is different. |

Taiwan and Korea are comparable in nearly every respect for non Chinese/Korean teachers.
The biggest differences are the pay and weather.
Korea pays better and the weather is warmer on Taiwan.
Other issues are a matter of perspective but pay and climate are two of the biggest motivations for people.
Good luck!

I spent a few years in Korea and enjoyed it immensely. I've done the same in Taiwan and enjoyed it immensely, too. Before I started my own school, that is.
If you hate it there, you're likely to hate it here, too. If you have other interests outside of food, then you might like it. Personally, I like Korean food and would never refer to it as slop. Taiwanese food, however.....
There are lots of good things to eat here, but a lot of the local food, to me, is slop. The food here is more varied than Korea, excluding western food. Chinese food is great and you can find great variation here. I also happen to believe that teaching jobs here are more interesting than those in Korea. But this might be a matter of place and time, rather than simply a matter of place. |
