I'm writing this to enlist your help in tracking down a book.

The 90th anniversary of the August landings at Suvla Bay (Gallipoli campaign - First World War) approach and I'm hoping to retrace my grandfather's footsteps. In order to do that I'm conducting some very amateur research.

I've heard tell of an English translation of a Turkish official history of that period in history. If such a book exists I would very much like to get hold of a copy. If anyone can shed light on this I would really appreciate it.

Thank you.

Hi FGT:

This may not be exactly what you're looking for, but it might help:

http://www.politicos.co.uk/item.jsp?ID=2599

"Studies of the Gallipoli campaign were few in the years since the Second World War, save those largely from an Australian perspective. This new work by Canadian historian Tim Travers, who lost several uncles at Gallipoli serving in the British Army, is a welcome look at the campaign, especially as he has used previously neglected Turkish sources as part of his research."

"This book provides a very thorough and technical analysis of the Gallipoli camapiagn or Canakkale as it is called in Turkey. The book has more information from the Turkish/Ottoman point of view compared to previous books I have read on this campaign ..."

This is part of the tribute to Kent as an ex-moderator (thank you for your reply and for your measured approach to the contributors to the Turkey forum) and a way of bringing this post back into the limelight.

I still have no info on any translation of an official Turkish history - come on bibliophiles. Is there no-one out there interested in history apart from me? Please, I only have another week to check out my grandfather's account before the 90th anniversary is upon me.

Thanks DMB, that was useful. I have done several searches on yahoo, google etc but hadn't actually seen that.

My problem is that my grandfather wrote in his book, "A Prisoner In Turkey" that he was captured AFTER his battalion (or what remained of them) had got to the summit of Tekke Tepe but retreated from there because the Turks had got there first. I can't find anything to substantiate his account. Was he a lier? Was he mistaken? Are the other accounts wrong or confused?

I can understand the allies not being aware of what might have gone on (behind enemy lines as it were) but if a British presence had been repelled from such an important strategic location, I would expect the Turks to recognise it (and revel in it). Therefore I am eager to read/hear about a Turkish account.

Any insights would be gratefully received.
