Scot47's decades of isolation in the desert are taking their toll!
Re CT scans, news that the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary has been hiring its scanner to oil firms to analyse rocks has sparked controversy. See http://news.scotsman.com/aberdeen.cfm?id=1643292005 |

I was curious to know why diabetes is quite common in the Gulf region, so I fished around the net to find something. These are some of the things I found:
According to the IDF Diabetes Atlas 2nd edition http://www.eatlas.idf.org/, in 2003 the five countries with the largest numbers of persons with diabetes were India (35.5 million), China (23.8 million), the United States (16 million), Russia (9.7 million) and Japan (6.7 million).
In 2003, the five countries with the highest diabetes prevalence in the adult population were Nauru (30.2 %), The United Arab Emirates (20.1 %) [In the UAE one in every four UAE nationals have diabetes], Qatar (16%), Bahrain(14.9%), and Kuwait (12.8%).
Gulf News Online 2003 -- Professor Faiman said diabetes is becoming the disease of the century in the UAE and is more common among adolescents, due to unhealthy nutritional habits and lack of exercise.
"A sedentary lifestyle and incorrect nutrition lead to overweight or obesity, which are among the main risk factors."
A higher quantity of food and a westernisation of the diet have strongly contributed to the escalation of the disease. The fast-food type with more fried and fatty dishes and an increasing use of sweets containing lots of carbohydrates, has led to a worsening of the local diet. The higher consumption associated with the bad quality of food leads to obesity and diabetes.
Arabs face higher risk of diabetes Studies of those in U.S. also reveal they smoke more and at younger ages. http://www.detnews.com/2005/health/0504/15/C01-148925.htm |

I've taught 8 and 9 year olds with teeth like something out of a horror movie (really sad actually), and so hyper on too much sugar they couldn't sit still for a second. I can well believe all the above. |

Health education seems to be in desperate need here, from some of the articles I've read. http://www.bhj.org/books/arabs/chap12.htm
If it is not being done now, maybe ESL/EFL teachers can incorporate diabetes education/ basic health education as a curriculum [together with the Ministry of Education, Health ...] to spread the word, and better educate the nationals. [One in every four UAE nationals have diabetes] that is an awful lot. It is an epidemic. |

In KSA the figures are around 25 percent. A huge number of diabetics ! Where I teach there is an attempt in PhysEd classes to teach about correct nutrition. Then you go and see what they are selling in the cafeteria ! Wow ! |
