I got a rejection letter from NOVA's Boston office. They wouldn't even give me an interview!
I don't understand why...I'm 26, a college grad, seven years journalism experience, one year ESL assistant...they didn't even give me a chance to sell myself.
Is this typical? And is it permanent? If I apply again in six months, will I still be on file as "rejected for interview?"
I want to go to Japan next year.

On the surface it seems rather odd. All I can figure is that your resume's appearance and/or that of your cover letter were not up to par with them.
They are not the only fish in the sea. Take it on the chin and move on, but have a look at your 2 documents in the meantime. People here (like me) offer to look at them, so if you want an honest appraisal, let me know.

Why not apply with the many other schools? Why NOVA ????
With that kind of work experience any of the other big eikaiwa will take you |

| Being a Canadian, I have a question regarding College Grad... Is that a bachelor degree? If not, that might be the answer for your rejection. Just curious... |

| I know one teacher at NOVA with a masters degree in Journalism who has just left NOVA after 18 months there so its not your experience IMO. Its probably the fact you dont have a Bachelors degree if you only graduated from a Canadian college rather than a university. |

I find it funny that someone is stressed out about not getting on with NOVA.
NOVA is a horrible company to work for.
There are thousands of EFL jobs in Tokyo - no need to get stressed. |

I dont think its so much that, but its that NOVA makes up 33% or 50% of the companies they apply to. NOVA turns them down and the chance of getting hired falls by half, when you only have one or two alternatives. No one likes rejection, when you have few possible alternatives to begin with or that will 'take a chance' on you.
Another reason may be the belief that 'anybody' but anybody can get a job with a big chain school (you have to not be breathing to get rejected) and its a shock to the system when they reject you especially if you think you are 'too good' for them. A little knowledge can be a dangerous thing. (How could they turn me down? They can't do this to me. (Feigned indignation).
My advice:
Take it on the chin, don't take it personally and always have something in back-up or reserve. Always have at least several alternative job offers lined up in case things don't go your way. Getting upset that one company doesnt hire you is putting all your eggs in one basket and hoping no eggs break. Its a sign of desperation. Its much better to play the numbers game and be able to turn them down through being spoilt for choice, rather than beg for a visa.
There are plenty of jobs here if you look, arent fussy and are persistent, but the average person doesnt want to get on the plane with no job lined up and hunt for a job from scratch in a foreign country. |

In Canada we usually use "college grad" and "university grad" interchangeably. As far as I know the only other kinds of courses are "community college" ones which are usually training in technical or other subjects but whose graduates are not usually called "college grads".
Of course I don't know about this particular person, but I'm guessing s/he has a degree. |

Do men call themselves "Steph" in Canada? Sounds like its short for Stephanie to me. |

Well thats right and the reason is found as to why this box was not ticked. I thought everyone knew NOVA only employed male teachers. |

Funny how people think the laws of physics dont apply when you apply for jobs in other countries with someone from another culture.
You can apply as many times as you like, there is no statute of limitations or "do not apply before ___x months have passed"
Timing is everything, maybe they werent hiring that month, and even if you do get an interview you will likely have a 7 month wait before you are sent out here. Are you prepared to wait that long?
Don't take rejection personally (which it sounds like you are, like you are damaged goods). Keep knocking on doors until someone says yes, and dont beat yourself up because some one doesnt give you the time of day.
Last year I sent resumes to 50 schools and got 50 rejections. Sometimes twice on the same day. Sure its tough but i dont beat myself up over it. Send out more resumes, talk to more schools. The sky wont fall in if you dont get a job with NOVA. I'd say you were one of the big fish that got away. |
