Hi there Very Happy ,

I have been teaching for almost one year now in China at a middle school near Beijing. My contract finished in July so did my residence permit. I wanted to stay in China but not at the same school. So to extend my residence permit I signed on for another six months and got the residence permit extended for another six months. However now I have been offered another position in Jiangsu province and would dearly like to work for this school. I have told my current school that I no longer would like to work for them, they are happy with that because I have gave them enough time to find a replacement, so we are not seperating on bad terms.

As they are on holidays right at the moment, they can not give me a release letter until the holidays finish. However the new school would like me to start before the end of August. Can I change jobs and work in another province without the letter? Or would I need to leave the country to get a new visa? If I have to leave the country can I just make a short trip to Hong Kong and get the visa there?

You may want to consult the thread www.eslcafe.com/forums/job/viewtopic.php?t=27378 as a guide.

Don't quote me on this but from the sound of that thread, it would seem that as you will not be staying in Hebei, you will not need a letter of release because your FEC will be issued in another province. Just make sure you leave your current FEC with the school when you leave.

OK, school administrations always have to return no less than a week before classes begin to prepare for the new term. So that gives you a week's time to get your release letter and to arrive at the new school. If you can't make it, then I know your new employer wouldn't mind one bit at all if you show up a few days after classes begin. The fact that you will be saving them a lot of work and money to get you the needed documents to get a Z visa if you were abroad is enough incentive for them to wait for you.

Not so T....release letters may be needed across prov. lines....depends on the prov...Beijing will ask for a release letter and a release form from the PSB..sometimes..

I would be surprised if they let you go with no further ado!
They have just forked out a substantial amount of money to keep you on their payroll, and now you say you and they agreed on separation?
Don't they want to have their money back?

YOur new resident's permit is valid for your place of work, not for that new one. You will have to be registered with the local PSB again - and if they see a renewed resident's permit they will refer you back to that place.

I am in Jiangsu and it seems that they are quite strict about the release letter. A teacher I know had completed his contract in Hunan and then came to teach to teacher in Jiangsu without having a release letter. The school was unable to process his visa until he finally got his last school to mail him a letter of release.
