Hello,
I might be heading to Guangzhou in the fall. Can anyone point me i the right direction? Do you know any good schools that pay decent wages for a monster city like Guangzhou? Any warnings or praise will be welcomed. By the way, i know that the city is dirty and crowded, so don't bother with that.
thanks |

There are a few universities - Zhongshan Uni (also "Dr. Sun Yat-sen Uni), South China Uni, The Uni of Foreign studies, and so on - all paying rather low salaries but offering good living conditions.
My experience with Guangdong Foreign Languages Normal School was a painful one.
There is an American school (that pays American salaries!), and a couple of other international schools with beautiful campuses.
Private training centres are a sore point. Avoid:
- Canadian International School: Misnomer for an illegal recruitment
agency in Tianhe;
- Guangzhou Daily Training Centre; owned by the PC, yet unable to
furnish you with valid and legally-required documentation! |

Yes, 6000 is reasonable money from a private training centre; you could actually ask for more - around 7000 to 8000 a month for 25 contact periods a week!
There is a western-funded training centre called ALTEC - it has no bad name but I got flamed once for saying as much; I never worked for them. My intelligence is that their pay is somewhat lower than your ideal salary.
There is Linguaphone. I once worked for them. Not a bad outfit, not too professional either.
Or GOES (Guangdong Overseas Education Services)l.
Visit www.thatsguangzhou.com - they might have vacancies offered in their classifieds list. |

I don't know of any good schools in Canton, but I can advise you to steer well clear of EF English Farce; they have one or two joke 'schools' (buildings with kids inside who don't have degrees or TEFLs or experience) there.
You do know that you need to find the position before coming, don't you? |
