Looking at apartments and checking out the prices of the security deposits and or key money. Nothing like the good ol' one month's rent deposit that is possibly fully refundable back in the states. Just wondering, for those of you who have rented an apartment on your own (no guarantor from your employer) how much did you have to pay initially for your little apartment?

Gulp. I hardly want to think about it but we paid out close to a million yen in deposit, key money, agent's fees and up-front rent...but our monthly rent is low and we have a really great 80 square meter apartment in Osaka.

By the way, Osakajojo, that picture is great!

In Osaka, there are lots of places that you don't have to pay key money, but the rent is a little more. Look in the Kansai Flea Market. There are lots. I opted by going through a real estate agent, Mini Mini. They charged one month's rent for the fee. I paid 150,000 key money/deposit, with 100,000 refundable when I move out. I had to pay the first month's rent too.

Here in Sapporo, I believe we paid 2 x 70,000 yen, plus insurance fees for a brand new (just constructed) apartment about 20 minutes from downtown and 20 minutes (in the opposite direction) from work.

About the same applies 4 years ago when we rented a smaller place not far away that was only 2 years old. Both places are 2 bedroom apartments.

I think the wife and I put down about 480,000 for a 2LDK in Funabashi Chiba, walking distance to the major station.

Well, we did it.

300,000 and will get 50,000 returned (hopefully) when we leave.
