we are currently 2 recent global tesol grads (2004) and we took a job in what was suppose to be huludao, liaoning province of china. upon arrival in beijing instead of being picked up by our employer, which was the arrangement that had been made, we were greeted by a stranger who handed us train tickets to another city. we arrived in daqing, which is up near mongolia and russia, and were not prepared to be living in such extreme cold. while here we met several other teachers, who worked for this company as well and the promise to them was the same. they were all under the assumption that they were going to a more southern part of china and ended up in daqing, which is china's largest oil field. the air is very dirty and so is the city. our employer has also with held passports to ensure you stay here. they have breached our contract on several occasions, and have changed our promised income several times. we just want to warn anyone that might be considering accepting a job with this company... Zi Cheng Foreign Language Training Centre, the contacts name is peter, and the email is [email protected] be safe and take care |

Hi,
Sorry to hear of your problems. Good on you for telling others about it.
I just have one question: Why did you get on the train in the first place?
Cheers! |

Why did you get on the train in the first place?
I'm just guessing, but probably they were freaked out to be in China, and somewhat in shock that an employer would pull that kind of a stunt, but didn't have anywhere else to go...
And, as they look to be new to this game, they probably thought that it would work out in the end, that no one could really so blatantly take the p#ss...
Personally, I wouldn't have, but this is the newbie forum, and I can see how it could happen.
Global, are you still there, at the school that's screwed you around like this? If so, are you leaving? I probably would, if I were you. If they start out like this, that doesn't bode well for the future. And there are plenty of old China hands around who could probably point you to ways out of this one, and into better situations.
Good luck in any case, and thanks for the heads up...
Justin
