just wondering what the big positives are for people living in taiwan? There seems to be a whole lot of negative posts (you people know who you are) but it doesnt seem like people generally share their good expieriences.
so what are they? |

I like the food. It seems that every place I go makes thier food just a little different. I don't get bored by eating mein every other day.
I like shopping at the cty markets. You never know what you will find there and the atmosphere is exciting.
I like the children. I teach preschool and the children are for the most part sweet. They can be a challenge at the same time but they are very rewarding.
I like the ease of travel. You can find a train or a bus to just about any destination you desire. There are beatiful places to visit and you can get to all of them. |

I love the challenge.
There are few places in the world where any activist will have so many opportunities to do so much.
Life is a challenge on a day to do basis and nothing is easy. Some may call that negative but I find it to be motivating and inspiring.
Good luck!

For me it is the freedom that living in Taiwan gives me. I work when I want to work. Play when I want to play. Eat what I want to eat. etc.

I'm just wondering what it is that you as an activist has done to positively impact upon the lives of foreign teachers in Taiwan. I am aware that your secret society of one has been around for many years, but what exactly you have acheived is not immediately clear to me. |

The countryside here is amazing. Taiwan is very well set up for hikers and nature watchers. I used to live in YangMing mountain which is considered as part of Taipei City. My view looked out onto a patioed golf course and mountain scenery, yet I could bike down the mountain in about 30 minutes and be in the thick of it.
My country (UK) has about 65 species of butterfly. Taiwan has almost 400, with 58 being native species. I love the bugs here.
Outside the city there are some great day trips to be had:
Wulai- the most well known.
ManYuehYuan
PingLin (tea museum etc)
Just do a web search for these places.
I saw a BBC short about one of the few really successful aboriginal groups in Taiwan called Smangus.
http://www.smangus.org/
We're helping them get their site translated into English as they're trying to develop eco-tourism out there.
For me the bottom line is that I hate the cities and love the countryside. I also happened to meet my wife out here. Apart from being financially starved, life is good.

Are these 2 points mutually exclusive or inclusive?
I only ask, cuz I find myself with not so much money but lotsa love. I am sure if I had less love, I'd have more money.
Or I could just work harder.
I like the job market in that there are plenty of opps. Unfortunately, it's like 99.9% working for Taiwanese bosses. That's a drawback.
Maybe once I get a surfeit of love, I will get married and work for myself. That should take care of everything, nu? |

But would you really be working for yourself? Only if the union is solid. ROCK SOLID!
I've never been married but have generally been happy here. Maybe your point about less love is valid.
Taiwan is a suitable place for me. I'm interested in the language and if you stay here long enough, you're sure to make money sooner or later, as long as you keep moving forward, as opposed to sideways. |

Mine would be, but I know what you mean. I know a guy who started a business here. It put so much strain on him and his relationship that he has neither now. |

I highly doubt my perfect partner would be my business partner. But once I am married, I don't have to rely on work permits from sketchy bosses. I guess that's what I meant. |

But what happens if you end up as your own boss--and you're sketchy? That's something I'm trying to cope with at the moment. I really do wish you good luck.
Life in Taiwan is pretty good. I would never really complain about and if I thought I could find something better somewhere else, I'd go there and do it. I don't always agree with the way that things are done here, but that would be the same regardless of where I was. Taiwan is a great place to take risks. It's easy to get back up. And you can do a lot with very little. |

Hey! Are you calling me sketchy?
Yeah, that would be a conundrum. What if you can't trust yourself??? The possibilities for more humour are boundless, but I gotta run. There's a Saturday night out there waiting for me, and I gotta go find it.

Actually I was calling myself sketchy. And I stand behind that. |
