I know that we're on the ring of
fire, we should not be complacent.

Interesting...

There was another tonight (8/Cool to add to the ever growing total.

Are there more earthquakes than usual this year ?

I have only been in Japan for 4 months and they are a weekly event in the Chiba region.

Is this normal ?

Can you say Tokai earthquake...?
It's coming...when...who knows? Better not to think about it. Just ride the seismic waves.

There is no method of determening when an earthquake will take place. The Big Earthquake has been about to hit for decades now. Any day, right? It's the great urban myth. Oh, not to mention that it's going to hit in Tokyo. Also, it's going to hit in Hokkaido. Oh, it's going to hit Osaka, too. Actually, where ever you live, that's where it's going to hit.

Hell, you can say anything is going to happen someday, and there is a good chance that it will, given enough time having passed. I'll make a prediction - there is going to be a big typhoon that hits Japan! ETA unknown.

A fifth plate was recently discovered. That throws most estimates off.
