Is it true that 3% of dogs in Bangkok are rabid? The reason I ask is that rabies shots are ultra-expensive over here in NZ ($345 including consultation) and I'm thinking that getting innoculated in Bangkok would be the much cheaper, and not particularly risky option. But I've read that organised crime is causing the integrity of many pharmacuiticals to be called into question. Is this a problem in Bangkok?

I had my rabies shots at Bumrungrad Hospital, along with all the others I needed for China. It's western standard medical care there, for a fraction of the cost.

The Soi dogs here in Bangkok are pretty tame.

I have more trouble with rabid Farang. Laughing

Here's a link to Bumrungrad Hospital -

if you decide to take Volodiya's advice:

Thanks Kent, I'll take Volodiya's advice.
And just tip-toe very gingerly around any mad-looking dogs for a while!

Never had any probs this end, nor have any of the people I know (in Bangers although there was that time in Chatuchak when the dog went mental and bit loads of people and it had rabies), but my mate and his bird had problems in Koh Phang Ngan and had to get the shots afterwards.

Why get them beforehand? Is it less bad than getting it afterwards?

I don't know - but it's 'recommended' by the travel books etc. As far as I know this might just be a medical rort, like cataract operations they can do for $40 in certain countries that here in NZ cost $2500!

I've not bothered and 99.99% of the people I know coming over (which is a fair few) haven't either.

Either way it would be IMO far cheaper this end.

I feel better for having had the rabies shots, though I think Kenkannif is right- get bitten, and you have to have more shots, anyway, just to be sure. I've known just one man who was bitten in Thailand. It worried him quite a lot, but he didn't seek medical care.

As for me, I wish the Thais ate dog meat- like the Chinese, Koreans and others, do. (Here in China, stray dogs are not a problem: I'm still waiting to see the first one.)

Always found the stray dogs i have encountered around the world (including here in Thailand) are a lot more docile and unthreatening than owners dogs let off the leash!

There is nothing worse than out walking in the park or the country or even just walking around residential areas and having some badly trained, aggressive, snarling creature baring their teeth at you.

And thats just the owners!!!!
