Any advice would be gratefully received.

From what I have heard and read Nova accomodation is a rip off. But if you are new to Japan maybe this is the best way to go because at least you know where you are staying before you get to japan. It would be stressful getting off the plane at Narita with no place to stay and trying to figure out the Tokyo subway system..

A disadvantage with Nova accomodation is that they technically own the apartment you pay rent to Massa Nova so if you have a fall out with them they can boot you out..

If you have friends in Japan to stay with until you find a place I would go with a gaijin house when you are in Japan you can check out lots of gaijin houses in person. This would probably work out to be cheaper than the Nova deal but i am not sure if they will pay for your train pass. if you get your own accommodations u might want to look into this matter. For example my train pass was about 7000 yen..

I hope this helps..

They will pay your train pass up to a certain amount whether you live with them or not.

It would be in your best interest to find your own place.
They pay for travel up to 23,000Yen a month.
The NOva apartments are decent, most of the time, but them you get the problem that if one roomie leaves, they just throw the next sucker who they hired in with you...and I have heard (and lived through)horror stories.

If you are going to Osaka, check out the Kansai Flea Market online to get a place or the Kansai Scene....decent places.
