I've just read one of Bertrand's posts that contains some wonderful mistakes, especially for one with his qualifications. Yet he feels justified in unleashing his withering sarcasm on d moon, a self confessed newbie who is looking for advice. He probably intended to type "extensive background in language".
What, exactly, does that mean, enquires our mean spirited poster?
I'd suggest:
He's been listening, speaking, and thinking in the language since he was two. Sounds pretty "extensive" to me.
Maybe not a Ph.D in Applied Linguistics, but I think he's got a Diploma in Common Sense and Plain Speaking.

No, no, no! Just because you speak and have endless data at your fingertips (taste buds and eardrums, maybe?) doesn't mean you can have an opinion about it! Christ, where exactly do you get off? Where did you get your PhD in Computer Science? Obviously, you aren't really even using this board.

Anyway, bet he studied a few languages.

Yes that's exactly what it means.

I apologize. I didn't proofread my post clarity. I didn't realize that a jumped up self-appointed 'enforcer' would get on my case for a lack of rigor. I guess I had assumed that a discussion forum was 'informal'.

Thank you again for everyone who posted helpful comments, I appreciate it!
