I think Kansai TimeOut usually has better jobs listed. 300 yen at a Junkedo Bookstore. VERY soon (after Obon) there will be a rush of hiring, when dispatch companies have confirmed that they have won contracts with some city school boards. I don't think the jobs will necessarily be great, but you need money and you want experience. I'll second what someone else mentioned though, you will have at least a six-week gap between getting hired and getting paid. Some companies will front you some money, but I wouldn't mention that in the interview
By the way, try I.E.S. in Osaka. Their number is (06)6202-7355. They gave me a couple of short-term teaching contracts when I was waiting for my current job to start. They got me a junior high gig, and an interesting gig near Lake Biwa-ko teaching English to some government workers going overseas for a conference. The staff at I.E.S. was always really professional with me, and very upfront about what they could and couldn't do for me. For what it was, it was a good experience. Good luck! |

Thank you to all who have sent me replies and advice. I should clarify a few things. Firstly, yes, I know its Obon/August/ the worst month to look for jobs. Unfortunately I still need to look for work to tide me over until the good times roll back in. Secondly, Im pretty responsible with money. I learned this from being an ESL/EFL teacher for so long. So when I say I need money I dont mean today. But I do need to get employment of some sort in the next couple of weeks to ensure that I get some pay before the REAL red time. Thanks to all who showed concern.
Also, no I dont have any publications yet. Thats my biggest stumbling block. My plan is to get some work/money/perhaps experience with kids (to put another feather in my cap) so that I have some breathing space to do some writing/ sending off. I had some excellent advice about this in the past from PaulH (Thanks PaulH!) Then I can think about applying to Unis.
As far as current applications are concerned, no I dont want to sound like I think Im above anyone else because of my MA. I only see myself as someone who loves the thing Im doing and thats why I wanted to delve into it further by studying. Im quite concerned about people getting the wrong impression about me as a teacher but I dont want to pretend I dont have my qualification in the wrong situation either and risk missing out on a job in that way. Ive finally received an English version of Word for my computer so Im going to spend Obon making a simplified version of my CV and do some more sending out in the coming week.
Again, thanks for all the advice, links, concern, etc.. I think its awesome to have such a great place for teachers to exchange information. I hope I can give back as much help as I have received on this site.
Cheers! |
