Hello,

I wanted to ask any posters whom happen to be or have been in Vilnius if they know of a place aside from International House which offers CELTA certification courses. Unfortunately they are holding their program in August and I plan on being in Leituva from Sept.-Nov. It need not be a CELTA per se, so long as its regionally recognized. I have had a hard time finding info on this online or in the archives, and I would greatly appreciate any and all assistance.

Cheers,

Juan

I didn't even know IH Vilnius offered the CELTA! Sorry, I don't know of any places (but you never know). There aren't that many big native speaker schools here and what there are, are being hard pressed now by the profusion of start ups employing local school teachers and students p/t to supplement their measly incomes.

You could try posting the same question on the General Europe forum too. It's a long shot but you never know. Most Lithuanians wouldn't thank you for lumping them in with the CIS I'm sure you know.

Good luck.

Actually, I don't think they do run the CELTA. I know on their website it looks as if they do, but if you look closer you'll see that they have run CELTAs in the past, but the course they are doing at the moment is the IH Certificate. This is a kind of in-house certificate organised by IH. It's not a bad certificate per se, but it doesn't have the international recognition that some of the other big certificates (CELTA, Trinity etc) do. However, I'm sure it's recognised by International House!! For long term prospects it's better to pay a bit extra and get the CELTA or Trinity.

As far as I know, no school in Lithuania offers the CELTA. If you want to do that, you would probably have to nip over the border to Poland and go to one of the IH centres there (Krakow, Katowice or Wroclaw).

I would be interested why so many people are interested in taking a celta or any suitable course in the country they are interested in going to. Can you not take it somewhere else, like your own area? And then go to Vilneus. Of course you have not said enough, it depends on your own personal circumtances

First stop for CELTA matters should always be http://www.cambridgeesol.org/index.htm

The cheapest CELTA in the region is at IH Kiev, Ukraine (590GBP). Schools in Poland, Bulgaria and Hungary also offer courses at a reasonable price (~700GBP). The Trinity TESOL can be done at several schools in Poland, but they don't seem to have websites and I don't know the course dates or prices. Any other certificate is of limited value and usually no cheaper.

Firstly, cost. A CELTA here in Australia (IH Cairns, Brisbane or Sydney) costs $2700AUD, and accommodation, meals and transport for the four weeks would be at least an additional $1000AUD, giving a total cost of around $3700AUD. Add another $100AUD for every night you go clubbing.

A CELTA at IH Kiev costs $1400AUD, and accommodation, meals and transport for the four weeks would be an additional $400AUD, giving a total cost of around $1800AUD - less than half the cost of doing it in Australia.

Additionally, doing the CELTA in-country allows better contacts for finding jobs at schools in the area.

Of course the situation becomes less clear cut when living in countries that have cheap CELTAs, such as the UK, and even less so when going to a country with expensive CELTAs (IH Prague: $2250AUD, BKC-IH Moscow: $2050AUD), and where living costs are relatively high (eg Prague and Moscow).

It gets even more complicated when dealing with weird-arsed EU work visa rules, such as in Poland where apparently it's necessary to apply for a work visa in your country of origin!
