Tommorow is the last day to book my discounted birthday flight and I'd like to go to Okinawa for about 5 days. I've heard from students however, that late Septmember is typhoon season. My question to those with first-hand experience on the island is; what does typhoon season actually entail? Does it mean that there are warnings most of the month and occasional typhoons or constant rain and heavy winds every week? Basically, what are the chances that i'll be stuck in my hotel room for most of my vacation? Also, what's the weather like at the end of September? Thanks alot for any help![/i]

The weather will still be hot and humid--much more so than in Honshu at that time of year. And yes, depending upon how late in September, there is the chance of a stray typhoon hitting as well--though not so much. I've been in a number of them--probably just me, but the smaller ones are actually kind of fun. Usually, they're in and out in a single day--very hot and humid from about 2 days before, and slightly cooler and dryer, with a lot of residual wind, afterward. Of course, if you're very unlucky and get hit by an unusually large one, then things are a bit different...still, what with earthquakes and such, you're technically not 100% safe anywhere in Japan.

I'd say the chances of a devastating typhoon striking in late September during the exact five days you are visiting Okinawa are pretty darn small--and frankly, something of that size would be all over the weather reports beginning 3-5 days before you left. I.e., you'd have to be both extremely unlucky and completely oblivious to get caught.

So, I'd say go...or send your tickets to me and I'll go instead. (Rest assured, I'll drink a toast to your birthday...several, in fact. Wink)

I'd be more worried about it p*ssing down rain the whole time. Far more likely. I lived in Okinawa for 2 weeks short of a year and there wasn't one typhoon come through in that time. Then again you could be SOL when you go. Don't let it stop you, Okinawa is a nice joint. Drink some awamori.
