That fact was not obvious from your question. And naturally many of the readers here have none...

Answer to the original question: nothing went wrong, we just had a larger than expected number of new students enrolling in Abu Dhabi. We just need one or two more instructors to cover that increase and we have already arranged interviews with a number of likely candidates. |

Hi, George,
So... you've got your interviews lined up, eh? Were you only interested in hiring from the ME? Or did you get PhD's who wanted the jobs?

I've only just got back from vacation so I don't have the details - I've just seen the list of interview times. However, the answers to your questions are:-
1. I doubt it, but in view of the urgency of the appointments, maybe.
2. Maybe, but that wouldn't give them any advantage: the qualification required is a Master's.
If you were hoping for an interview and haven't been invited for one, I suggest you contact HR by email or send me a PM and I'll look into it. |

Hey Ricket!! You must get over this PhD envy!! I don't know any PhDs teaching EFL in the Gulf. People get them to get OUT of EFL...

I know two PhDs teaching EAP in China - they are at the same school that I am teaching at! A third PhD whom I know also taught there until July, but she has gone back to Blighty now. |

Well, I was speaking of the Gulf, not China...
Everyone working on a PhD that I have encountered over the years around the ME has been desperately trying to get out of TEFL. I must admit that I could see their point... especially if they were ever planning to go back 'home.'

Great! I thought younggeorge might help us out with information and he is even willing to help those who might be able to get in just under the wire. Thanks. |

So far I know a number of people who have send in their CVs and send emails to HR, but none of them have received any responses.
Hey younggeorge... have you got some wasta?
Don't get your hopes up too far anytime now... it's late in the game...

I wish! I was offering to check on applications and possibly explain rejections - though technically I'm not even suposed to do that. There's no way I could get anyone "under the wire".
We do have 2 PhD's with us at the moment and 2 others moved on to different, but related, positions last year. Generally, as VS says, when we explain what the ELC jobs actually involve, candidates with PhD's decide they're actually looking for something a little different - "real university" work - but as far as recruitment is concerned, a PhD is neither an advantage nor a hindrance; we look at what they've actually done and what they say they want to do. |

George, when do you think the best time of year is to apply at Zayed, for Sept. 2006?
On average, how many positions are usually open then? |

The next recruiting season will be March/April 2006 for August starts. New arrivals are normally expected to get here in the 2nd week of August - I'm not sure of the exact date for next year yet. The number we need will depend on projected student enrollment and the number of current teachers who renew their contracts. It will probably be 10-15. |
